Curricular Arts News

Mrs Christine Larsen

The past few weeks of Term 2 have been flowing with creative endeavours with various Arts activities taking place.

Week 7 saw the Media, Drama, Music and Visual Art Departments celebrate the Arts through our annual Creative Industries week. Throughout the week, students were entertained with live performances and participated in a range of workshops which included a live paint session in the yard by Brisbane street artist, Jordache, an interactive workshop in the recording studio with Old Boy, Joel Adams and an improvisation performance in the Draney Theatre, which saw Mr Adam Knight step into an episode of Thank God You’re Here (Marist style), pitting his improvisation wits against four senior students.

During Week 8, Year 11 and 12 Visual Art students visited the Gallery of Modern Art to view the Creative Generation Excellence in Visual Art awards, followed by a visit to Reverse Garbage at Woolloongabba, (Queensland's only eco arts and reuse centre specialising in the collection of clean industrial discards), to access materials for their current assessment.

We congratulate our May “Artwork of the Month” winner, Alistair Malghem for the skill he has shown in creating a ceramic spherical construction based on the natural and built environments and inspired by the ceramic artwork by First Nations artist, Thancoupie.

The Certificate II in Visual Art course is in full swing, with this being the first year that this course has been introduced. The year 12 students have been involved in learning about glass slumping and fusing and each has produced a fused glass coaster and a slumped glass plate. We look forward to the end result once they have been fired in the kiln and displaying a selection in the upcoming Tower Art Show in August.

“Liveworks”

“Liveworks” is an evening of Music, Drama, Visual Art and Media to showcase the talents of year 7 – 10 Arts students. Come along to the Draney Theatre on Monday 17 June from 6.00pm and enjoy a night of entertainment straight from our Arts classrooms. All are invited.
