Year 9/10
Ms Hayes and Ms Hassan
What an incredible start to the year!
Our year 9’s have been incredible. We have had a jam-packed term with excursions, NAPLAN, Morrisby interviews and so much more. We had our celebration assembly this week celebrating our students accomplishments in attendance, RGAR and grade point average.
Our highlights:
Attendance – so important that students are at school. The data shows clearly that more time at school means better future prospects. We had so many students in the 95% - 100% range. We want to encourage students to challenge themselves to be at school everyday for term 2. Our 100% attendance students will be attending a pizza and hot chip lunch at the beginning of term 2.
Uniform – on the whole uniform has been great. A reminder that winter uniform starts in term 2.
Outdoor education excursions – rock climbing excursion was a hit and the students had an incredible time.
Our student leaders were elected this term with more that 290 students voting in year 9 for the student representatives. Congratulations to Lujein Egab and Nayo Niranjan.
The following students received 100% attendance:
These students has not only demonstrated exceptional dedication and perseverance but has also achieved the highest Grade Point Average (GPA) in the entire cohort.

Year 9 students enrolled in the Mandarin elective engaged in making Chinese dumplings in the kitchen, enhancing their comprehension of the Chinese cuisine. Additionally, they practiced eating the food with chopsticks.
STEM
On the 29th of March, 14 students from year 9 and 10 went on a STEM excursion to ARUP organized by Our Schools in Melbourne to be briefed in what STEM in Real life would look like. There were multiple schools from all over Victoria that were present at ARUP.
We got off at Southern cross station and walked a few minutes to get to the building. We were warmly welcomed into the 5-star sustainable building of ARUP with refreshments like tea, some chocolates and fruits. We waited for every school to come and settle down, and then the show started. We first had a Q and A with the head architects and engineers of ARUP. Afterwards we were separated in groups from different school to work on a collaborative task. The ladies described about the living situation in Cambodia and how they live in “floating houses”. We had to create a house of our own from $40 (fake money) out of straws, cups, balloons, string and tape. Instead of people being able to live in the house we created, we used marbles to measure how much our house could hold. The highest score was 146 marbles. Our model only held 19 marbles… The other CESC groups house held 62. We were given a tour of the ARUP building and explained how the whole building was designed and engineered by the architects and engineers at ARUP. We were then given lunch, a variety of bagels with amazingly tasty fillings and we talked and met with some of the head architects and engineers.
Overall, the day was amazing, with amazing opportunities and innovative ideas. We had to collaborate to overcome problems, which my team appeared to have a lot of, from recreating the house 2 times, we finally were able to store 19 marbles. Collaborative teamwork, and 4 brains are better than 1 😊
Year 10
At the end of Term One I am pleased to say that the Year 10 student cohort has shown a huge improvement in overall attendance compared to this time last year when they were in Year 9. In fact, Year 10 has the best attendance of all year levels for March which is an excellent effort! In our recent Celebration assembly, we congratulated several students with 100% attendance and many more with 97% and over attendance.
It has been an eventful term but really positive and productive. The Careers team has been busy interviewing all Year 10 students and learning about their goals in readiness for course counselling mid-year. The Year 10 students have also have the opportunity to engage in a range of excursions for different subject areas including going to the Vietnam War Museum for the Vietnam War elective, Top class performance in the city for Music as well as the Old Melbourne Magistrate’s Court for The Law and I. Student participating in the Outdoor Education elective have been on camp for the last two days, and teachers have been impressed with the behaviour and engagement of our students.
During Term 1, we elected our Student Leaders for year 10. These students are extremely passionate about improving the experiences for all students within with cohort. A group of our Year 10 leaders participated in a workshop called ‘the school of play’ where they developed their leadership skills and learned strategies to run workshops with a focus on improving student wellbeing around our school and in the broader community. As leaders we are extremely proud of their efforts so far this term and are looking forward to the positive work they continue across the rest of the year.
Nearly all students continue to be in full school uniform, working with their teachers and behaving in a mature and polite manner. It is pleasing to see that our students understand the importance of Year 10 and doing their best so they have as many options as possible when choosing their future pathway. Attendance will remain a focus this year and we will continue to work with students and families to improve attendance across the cohort. Attendance is the key to success for all our students!
