Outside the Classroom

Ramadan Cultural Exchange Program

In Term 1, students spanning years 7 to 12 participated in the Ramadan Cultural Exchange Program hosted at the Islamic Museum of Australia. The session featured four esteemed guest speakers who shared their experiences and answered questions from students in a "You Can't Ask That" format. Our distinguished guest speakers included Sumeyya Ilanbey, a business journalist at The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald; Mutaz Elnour, a player for Richmond VFL; Betul Mercandag, a psychologist; and Sumeyye Ozdamar, a senior civil engineer at the Department of Transportation.

Annual CHS Iftar

This year, we had the wonderful opportunity to embrace our cultural diversity alongside the entire school community during our annual CHS Iftar. Families from diverse backgrounds came together at the school, each bringing a dish to share and engage with one another. The turnout was fantastic and it was wonderful to see so many people from our community.

Volleyball

On Tuesday the 5th of March, our Year 9 boys went out to compete in Divisional Volleyball. The boys tried hard to make it through to the next round. Our two teams won three out of their 5 matches only barely losing the other two. The match between each other was filled with long rallies and spirited trash talk. The boys had very little playing experience before this Tournament, however they learnt quickly on the fly with help from their coaches. Although they knew they didn’t make it through to the next round, the bus ride back was filled with jovial smiles and good times.

Seniors

The senior boys have been training hard for a year, they had a lot of pressure on themselves and didn’t quite get through to the next stage but in saying that, their efforts were amazing!

Nerves might have got the best of them in their first match, but in their second set of 3 they won 20-6 which shows just how good they are. Unfortunately lost the 3rd set.

The second game they versed Eltham, who have been state representatives on multiple occasions. Eltham got the win, but to our team's credit this was only due to a very close 20-18 loss in the second set. Amazing!

The boys went on to win their third game quite easily.

For them to be at that standard after only 1 year of mostly self-training, I'm unbelievably proud of them and how mature and responsible they have been using the gym and equipment for training. They may not be progressing any further but their success and teamwork has made all of CHS very proud of them.

With a year and a half of training hard in and out of school, and two separate interschool attempts, we all came into the divisional volleyball event with open minds and high spirits for both our A and B team. On the day of, we all played our best, and it showed throughout the event and games, beating out the entire divisional pool to end with our A and B team finishing first and second respectively, progressing from the divisional stage into regionals. Sadly, only the A team will continue, so we wish them all the best for their future games.

Rune, B team member.

On the day of divisionals, all our boys were riled up and excited to give it our best against our neighbouring schools. We proudly beat all of our opponents and believe that we have a chance in regionals to win against competitive volleyball-centric schools. We are incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to practice in the gym regularly, with a massive thanks to all of our P.E teachers and hope we get to continue our practice to take our school into and possibly past regionals.

Cricket

Congratulations to the Intermediate Boys Cricket team who won the Regional Finals on Thursday the 7th of March. It was a tough game against Hazel Glen as both teams fought to the end. Coburg High started off bowling strong and ended up having to chase a total of 164 runs to win. As the day went on and the sun got stronger, so did the boys. It came to the last over and Coburg had to make 10 runs to win. Reggie and Archie were our batters for the last over with Reggie taking the strike. On the last ball, Reggie hit a 4 to take home the win. We would like to congratulate the team on a fantastic win and a special shout out to Reggie for stepping up his game and to Nicanor for leading the team with great confidence. The team will be going to state in term 4. Well done team.

Library

Welcome to another library update. We had the first Library Trivia Master for the year where the theme was International Women’s Day. Students had the task of deciphering clues to reveal amazing women in history. We had a fantastic turnout with many students entering the challenge to win a cafe voucher and an entry into the end of year major prize. There could only be one winner though. That winner is not a stranger to Library Trivia Master and she has come through to win yet again. Congratulations Deborah P. Your record of champion for the past four years is yet to be challenged. Can she finish her time at Coburg High School as the undefeated Library Trivia Master champion? Only time will tell….

Finally, there is the first of our library book sale fundraisers which we held this week in time for the holidays. It never ceases to amaze me how passionate our CHS students are about books. We raised just over $300 which will go towards purchasing new books for the library collection. Thanks CHS students!

Student Achievements

Debating

Finn M of Year 12 won the Swannies award for the Coburg region in B grade in 2023 as the top speaker with the highest average score, and this year he received the award at the ceremony, held at the State Library of Victoria on 15 February. The Swannies awards to out to those who have the best average score in their region and grade. From around 10,000 debaters only 100 received Swannies - it is a huge achievement and Finn should be proud of himself.

Beach Volleyball

Buckley P of Year 8 recently represented Victoria in U15s at the 2024 Volleyball Championships in Coolangatta. Although they didn’t come back with the Gold Medal, the experience and participation at this level was an incredible experience. Buckley represented himself, coaches, parents, friends, family, school, and State in an impressive and respectful way and with several wins and a squad-high 8th place for his team, he hopes for even better results next year!
