Hands on Learning

With the formalities of paper work out of the way, Hands on Learning got off to a red hot start on Tuesday, not least because of the weather.
The program methodology is simple, “together”. Ponder this a moment if you will “if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”.
Our journey has started with a focus on safety and the freedom to make mistakes. This is where I feel the most powerful learning can occur. Giving the students the confidence to have a go, safely make a mistake and find another way to success.
The cohort for this term immediately embodied the ideals of “respect” and “together’. Even though we were all hungry and the meal infiltrating our senses, the students patiently waited for everyone to be seated and only then began to eat. This pure display of manners and respect came without any prompting from me or any other student, I find this remarkable!
Following is what the students had to say about day one,
Hands on learning has already been my favourite part of the week, not because we get out of school work, but for the simple fact that we learnt so mletteruch and it’s only my first week. We talked about how to stay safe, make new friends and how to get the best version of me.
The activities we participated in include touring our workplace and how we can upgrade it to measuring with a tape measure and carpenters square used to mark wood. We also went over safety which is one of the most prioritised things when it comes to Hands of Learning.
One of my favourite things about Hands on Learning is that we all have different roles every week which is going to take me to the next part of this speech.
On Tuesday, Kevin our star chef for the week, cooked lunch for us. It was an amazing and yummy combo of hot dogs, onion and bacon.
We always look for new Ways to make the garden better and we include all our ideas. I have overall enjoyed this weeks Hands on Learning and cant wait for next week.

On Tuesday we had our first Hands on Learning. Ashlee, Kevin, Kane and I went down to the garden.
After we got there we had a little talk and had something to eat. After we ate Brett showed us the Hands on Learning office. We were sweating so much because it was a hot day, but anyway Brett showed us how to use some tools.
We didn’t do much because it was hot. After Brett showed up some tools we needed to go back to school as everyone was sweating so much. After we got back we had lunch and had hot dogs with bacon, onion, cheese and tomato sauce, but only if we wanted too. After we had lunch Brett said we could have a zooper doper after we cleaned the Ronny Room. It looked much better. After that was done we had another talk about what we liked and some other stuff but technically we were finished and that was our first day of Hands on Learning.

On Tuesday we had Hands on Learning with Brett, Ashlee, Kevin, Anika and I. At 10 am we headed down to the enviro garden and Brett explained the safety rules and what we would be dong for the day. We walked over to the metal crate that was our workshop that had lockers, workbenches and shelves. When we were over there, we learned how to measure angles and mm, sadly we didn’t get to use the tools all because it got too hot. Next, we went inside because it was getting hot and we had lunch. For lunch Kev cooked up hot dogs. The hot dogs were yummy, after hot dogs we had zooper doopers. Lastly, we went and sorted out Ronny’s shop, we moved tables out and put some sports equipment in the shed and put the rewards on the shelves. Ding, Dong then it was lunch, we were supposed to do it over lunch but Brett let us go for lunch instead because we worked so hard.
