Principal's Ponderings

From our Principal - Mr Chad Smit

With God Things are Possible

My journey with phone technology began humbly with a Motorola analogue phone in 1996, featuring a quaint pull-up antenna (hands up who knows what I'm talking about?). This relic from the past, which I only powered on to make calls in a bid to conserve its battery, symbolises a simpler time in our technological journey. I recently saw a 2001 news segment (yes, one that is 23 years old), communicating that mobile phones may have cameras soon and we may soon be able to send friends photos. It questioned the future of 'text messaging', would it really 'become a thing', and the nascent idea of camera-equipped mobile phones. Why would we need a camera on our phone? Fast forward 23 years and I am reminded of how far we have come—and how sceptical we once were of innovations that are now indispensable to our daily lives. Some of us do not even need a separate camera, diary, calendar, alarm clock, wallet, remote etc because the beloved phone can do it all.

Today, as we stand on the brink of further technological marvels like everything electrical, drone-delivered meals or flying taxis, not to mention AI, our scepticism often mirrors that of the past. Yet, at DCS, we are committed to fostering a hopeful vision for the future—one where our students not only thrive on today's opportunities but also lead with compassion and love, guided by the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Imagine a world where the prayers of our community have been answered: technology that enhances science to have diseases that have long plagued humanity eradicated; where global food distribution is equitable and the message of Christ reaches every corner of the globe; one where everyone is seen and treated equal. This vision aligns with scripture, reminding us of the transformative power of faith. Matthew 19:26 tells us, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." It is this divine possibility that fuels our hope for a future where wars cease and inequality is but a distant memory. I have even recently heard reports that in Gaza, Palestinians have seen visions and dreams of Jesus! All things are possible.

Our scepticism towards technological advancements is not new. Ecclesiastes 1:9 observes, "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again;

there is nothing new under the sun."

Yet, it is our faith in Jesus Christ that empowers us to see beyond the present, to envision a world transformed by His love and teachings. As Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:7; "For we live by faith, not by sight."

It is this faith that underpins our mission at DCS, encouraging us to pray and work tirelessly towards a future that reflects God's kingdom on Earth.

As we ponder the advancements the next 30 years may bring, let us do so with hearts full of hope and minds open to the unimaginable ways God can use our wisdom, invention and even technology for His glory. From intelligence that aids in spreading the gospel, to innovations that ensure the stewardship of God's creation, the possibilities are endless. But more importantly, let us focus on how we, as a community, can embody the teachings of Christ in every action, using whatever platforms and tools available to us to spread love, justice, and peace.

I invite you to join me in prayer and action, seeking God's guidance as we endeavour to shape a future where our children and their children inherit a world marked by the love of Jesus. Let us hold fast to Hebrews 11:1, "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see," as we commit to being beacons of hope and agents of change in our community and beyond. Together, with God's help, we can witness the realisation of our prayers for a better world, one innovation, one act of kindness, and one soul at a time.
