Visual Arts

Mara Howlett

In Visual Arts this term, there has been a focus on the theme ‘Express and Explore Ideas’, with students being supported to explore the sensory aspects of Art such as sound, smell and the feel of different Art materials. They have been exposed to the Art elements of colour, shape, line and texture in different activities throughout the term.

We made self-portraits by painting a background using watercolour paint, then using oil pastels to draw our faces. Students looked at photos of themselves to help them draw their portraits, and there was a focus on shape as we explored how to draw the shape of a face, eyes, noses and smiles.

We also made Hundertwasser lollipop trees. Students learned about different line types while painting the backgrounds, such as straight lines, wavy lines, and zigzags. They also practised drawing different sized circles while making the lollipop trees.

We spent some time contributing to a whole school display for Harmony Week! Students painted a small square piece of paper using one colour. Then, they drew their own design, or chose a design to be drawn on their square, following the prompt 'Draw something that makes you happy'. The final result is a rainbow gradient of colours using students' designs.

Well done everyone for an amazing first term of Visual Art for 2024!
