From our 1/2 Classrooms

Over the past two weeks, students have been engaged in a range of learning experiences designed to strengthen their skills across Literacy, Mathematics and our Content learning areas.

Literacy learning has centred on information texts. Students explored the purpose and structure of information reports, learning how writers organise facts into clear sections. As part of this work, students created their own animal information reports, practising how to write simple sentences, organise facts and include diagrams with labels to support their explanations.

Attention was also given to the language features of information texts. Through teacher modelling and shared writing, students first observed how information texts are constructed before practising together and then applying their learning independently. This approach helps strengthen students’ confidence and understanding of how information texts work.

Another important part of this learning has been researching and collecting information. Students practised gathering facts from texts and other sources while thinking carefully about which information is important to include in their reports.

Targeted phonics lessons have also continued to build students’ phonics knowledge, supporting the development of decoding and word reading skills. These lessons help students become more confident readers and writers.

The Content learning area has focused on Geography, particularly maps and how they help us understand places. Students explored questions such as What is a map? and Why do people use maps? They also learned about different types of maps and key features of maps, including symbols and labels. This learning helped students understand how maps can be used to collect and communicate information about places.

Mathematics learning has continued to develop students’ understanding of place value. Through a range of hands-on activities and discussions, students explored how numbers are built using tens and ones, supporting their ability to read, write and order numbers with increasing confidence.

Social and Emotional Learning lessons focused on emotional literacy and positive friendships. Students explored acts of friendship, shared stories about acts of kindness and participated in The Connections Game, which encouraged them to think about ways to build friendly and respectful connections with others.

It has been wonderful to see students showing curiosity, asking thoughtful questions and supporting one another as they continue to grow in confidence as readers, writers and learners.
