From our Foundation Classrooms

It has been a busy and exciting time in Foundation as students continue to build their literacy, numeracy and oral language skills through engaging learning experiences.

In literacy, students have been exploring the much-loved story Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?. To bring the story to life, we went on an animal hunt around the school to find the different animals from the text. As students discovered each animal, they practised reciting parts of the story using full sentences, strengthening both their memory and oral language skills.

We have also been learning about gardens and living things. Students enjoyed a visit to our community garden where we searched carefully for a hungry caterpillar, linking our learning to the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This experience encouraged students to observe nature closely and talk about what they could see in the garden.

Another favourite text has been Boggity Bog. After listening to the story, students worked together to make special juice, just like in the book, which we shared with our school leadership team. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to connect stories with real-life experiences and practise following instructions.

In mathematics, students have been exploring shapes and learning how to group objects into categories based on their attributes. These activities help build important early problem-solving and reasoning skills.

Students have also been learning their first CVC and are beginning to develop the lifelong reading skill of segmenting and blending sounds to read words. This is an important step in learning how to decode unfamiliar words and become confident readers.

We have also been very fortunate to have the support of our school captains and year 3/4 students, who have been joining us in the classroom to help support our Foundation learners. This has been a wonderful way to build friendships and help our youngest students develop a strong connection to school. The student leadership are becoming important supports as Foundation students begin to explore more areas of the school grounds, not just the F–2 playground. Our school captains have joined us for fine motor development, maths, reading, outdoor social and emotional learning lessons, and have even enjoyed reading students their favourite books. Foundation would like to thank the teachers and students who have taken the time to support our youngest learners. We look forward to many more shared learning adventures together!
