Principal's Message

Student Leadership at BNPS

Schools work best when students have a strong and authentic voice. At our coming assembly on Monday 16 March, we will be celebrating our student leadership program for 2026.

We have a range of leadership opportunities for our students, particularly in their senior years of schooling. Our Grade 6 students can apply to be leaders in the following areas:

  • Literacy
  • School Wide Positive Behaviour Supports (SWPBS)
  • Italiano
  • Music
  • Art
  • Physical Education

Students were asked to write applications for these positions, with leaders appointed by merit. They will work alongside the staff who lead these areas across the school, supporting and informing our programs.

This year also sees two exciting new leadership roles at BNPS. For the first time, we have appointed school captains, who meet regularly with school leadership to provide student voice and lead projects, as well as performing ceremonial duties at significant school events. We have also welcomed student volunteers into the 'Wick on Friday mornings, where they work alongside our community volunteers to help meet the ever-increasing demand from customers.

Beyond these senior roles, each class from Grades 1–6 has a nominated Junior School Council (JSC) representative and a Green Team representative, both voted for by their peers. JSC works to improve the student experience at our school — recent examples include the new oval timetable, the play markings on the asphalt near the Blue Park playground, and the student consultation for the new Yellow Park playground. Green Team channels student energy into sustainability initiatives, including their involvement in the Open Streets program on Westbourne Street in 2025.

Students from Grades 4, 5 and 6 can also join our Inclusion Action Team, who work to ensure we are continuously providing an inclusive and safe environment for all.

We know our students thrive when given leadership responsibilities — and our school is better for it. We are proud to have students who are excited to contribute to our community, and we hope you will join us at Monday's assembly to celebrate them.
