Careers and VET

This term has seen the continuation of Careers Education at Evans High School, with Year 10 students commencing their fortnightly careers lessons. These sessions have been valuable in preparing students for subject selection, as well as developing their understanding of the ATAR and the range of study and pathway options available to them. Students have also been introduced to the Start Your Future program as part of this learning.

A number of students have been participating in Start Your Future courses, gaining hands-on experience across a variety of industries. This year has also seen the introduction of a new butchery course, further expanding the opportunities available to students. Interest in the program continues to grow, with an overwhelming number of students expressing interest for Term 2. Currently, 35 students have signed up to participate in a range of courses.

With early entry for university courses approaching, a number of Year 12 students attended a UAC session, which provided valuable insight into the university application process and what to expect when applying.

Year 10 students also participated in a Careers Incursion, where they engaged in a range of facilitated sessions focused on education and career pathways. These included information on VET and EVET options, apprenticeships, and developing job-seeking skills.

Looking ahead, there are many exciting opportunities coming up in Term 2. Students are encouraged to regularly check the ‘Evans High School Careers Updates 2026’ Google Classroom page to stay informed and sign up for workshops and a range of other activities. One upcoming opportunity is the Western Sydney Careers Market, open to Year 10 students next term. This event provides a valuable opportunity to speak with industry and education representatives, helping students make informed decisions about their future pathways. The cost is $7, and interested students should complete the Google Form available on the Careers Google Classroom page.

Our VET courses continue to provide students with valuable, hands-on learning experiences across Entertainment, Fitness, and Hospitality. Students studying Entertainment have successfully completed their White Card, an essential requirement for working safely in the construction and events industries, providing them with a strong understanding of workplace health and safety. A number of these students will also be participating in upcoming work placement opportunities at the Easter Show.

Hospitality students have been busy completing their work placement hours through the weekly Evans Café, where they prepare and serve hot drinks, snacks, and breakfast items. They have also been involved in catering for school events, including the Cross Country and Meet the Teacher evening, allowing them to develop practical skills in a real-world setting.

Fitness students have taken a hands-on approach to their learning by facilitating fitness activities with junior classes as part of their work placement hours. They have also successfully completed their First Aid course, equipping them with essential skills for working safely and confidently in the health and fitness industry.
