Physical Education

It is with great excitement that I introduce myself as the new PE teacher at Bittern Primary School. I look forward to meeting all of you and sharing the sporting achievements of our students with our wonderful community.

Within the PE space, we are focusing primarily on PMP and Fundamental Movement Skills with the P-2’s and moving towards games based learning with the 3 - 6’s. The 3 - 6’s will begin this year by learning and refining their athletics skills, focusing on improving our sequencing of each skill and bettering distance and power.

Within the Health sessions, I will be working alongside Brenda to reintroduce the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen program, exploring all the areas of the kitchen, covering knife skills, setting and clearing our table and preparing meals to share. Outside of the kitchen, we will be gardening, planting seedlings, weeding and using our knowledge to make real life applications in our nutrition theory lessons.

Our sporting calendar is filling up for Term 1, with the District Swimming Carnival approaching on the 26th February at Crib Point Swimming Pool and the Summer Lightning premiership on 26th March. We are still negotiating our sport selection but watch this space and compass for the latest updates.

Looking forward to sharing our successes with you all in the next newsletter.

DIGI TECH

In Digital Technologies, students across all year levels have been engaging with foundational concepts around technology and digital systems. Prep and Year 1 students have been exploring “What is technology?”, identifying the differences between digital and non-digital systems. Year 2 students have focused on digital systems in everyday life, recognising how technology supports daily routines. Students in Years 3 and 4 have investigated what makes a digital system, including hardware, software, and networks, while Years 5 and 6 have examined the components of digital systems and how they interact. These lessons provide students with a strong understanding of technology and its role in the world around them, forming the basis for future learning in Digital Technologies.

In addition, students in Years 3/4 and 5/6 have undertaken learning about the school’s Acceptable Use Agreement, which outlines the expectations for ethical and safe use of technology within the school. Students were required to read this agreement with their parents and return it signed as soon as possible in order to continue using Digital Technologies equipment at school. This process helps reinforce the importance of responsible digital citizenship and ensures that all students can engage safely and respectfully with technology.

Auslan (Australian Sign Language)

It has been wonderful to be back in Auslan (Australian Sign Language) over the past two weeks. During this time, students across the school have been revising key signs and concepts they have already learned, helping to build confidence, accuracy and fluency. This revision phase has also given students the opportunity to reflect on their progress and begin making connections to what they will be learning next. Our Auslan program is aligned with the Victorian Curriculum, Auslan as a Second Language, supporting students to communicate meaningfully while developing cultural awareness and respect for Deaf communities.

As the term progresses, each year level will explore new learning tailored to their stage of development. The grade 5 and 6 students will be focusing on interpreting, constructing and learning the Acknowledgement to Country in Auslan, deepening both their language skills and their understanding of respect and connection to country.

In the grade 3 and 4 area students will be learning signs related to the school environment, including subjects and stationery, enabling them to communicate more effectively in everyday classroom contexts.

Year 1/2 students will be developing their number knowledge by learning signs for the numbers 11 to 100, as well as signs for parts of the body, while our Foundation students will continue to build a strong foundation in Auslan through greetings and colours. We are looking forward to a rich and engaging term of Auslan learning across the school.

Visual Arts

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to a new year in Visual Arts! It’s been wonderful to see students return with enthusiasm and creativity as we settle into our classroom routines. Across all year levels, students have been focusing on completing their name tags for their Visual Arts portfolios, getting organised, and revisiting expectations for working safely and respectfully in the art room.

Year 1 and year 2 students have jumped straight into hands-on making by exploring line and form through 3D paper line sculptures. Using simple materials, they have been bending, twisting, and shaping paper to create sculptural artworks, while learning how lines can move, stand, and interact in space.

Year 3/4 students are exploring visual tricks and perception with their 3D optical illusion hand artworks. By carefully using line, shape, and shading, they are creating the illusion of depth and movement, producing eye-catching artworks that really make you look twice!

Year 5/6 students are continuing work on their graffiti-style name tags, combining bold lettering, colour, and design. Alongside their practical work, students are engaging in thoughtful discussions around the question “Is graffiti art or vandalism?”, encouraging critical thinking about art, public spaces, and intent.

It’s been a fantastic start to the year, and we’re looking forward to seeing students continue to develop their creativity, skills, and confidence in Visual Arts.
