Principal's Message

Welcome back to Brunswick North Primary School for Term 3. It has been a fantastic start to the term, with students quickly settling into our learning routines and continuing the excellent work we have seen throughout 2026.

Ride and Stride Open Street

It was brilliant to see so many students and families riding, scooting, skating and walking to school last Friday for our first Open Street of the year. The vibe on Westbourne Street before and after school was really fun, with students enjoying the freedom to ride and play.

Merri-bek City Council's Open Streets program, run through its Ride & Stride initiative, temporarily closes the street outside participating primary schools to car traffic during drop-off and pick-up times so kids can walk, ride, scoot and play safely. The council has found this initiative can lift active travel rates from around 50% to 70% on average.

A big thank you to our student green team and the community volunteers who organised this event. The volunteers have completed training with Merri-bek Council to ensure the event is run safely; we thank them for the time and effort that has enabled this event.

Centenary Film

As I am sure you are aware, this year marks the centenary of BNPS being open on our current site. To mark this significant occasion, a group of community volunteers have been working to create a short film, documenting the last 100 years of education at our school.

This project took a significant step forward this week, with many former students visiting our school to be interviewed by the team, live on camera. These former students shared their stories about their experience at our school, ranging from a 2019 graduate right back to students who attended BNPS in the 1940s.

It was amazing to hear how school life has changed, and stayed the same.

The work the team is putting into this project is extraordinary. From sourcing former students, preparing interview questions, lending film equipment and expertise, searching archives and digitising artefacts, the work being done is brilliant.

The film will be shown at our centenary celebration, scheduled for the evening of Friday, October 23. Make sure you save the date!

'Wick Volunteering

A reminder the 'Wick is now open on Monday and Friday mornings, serving great coffee and snacks to our community. Our café is run purely by volunteers, with all profits going back into our school. We are always on the lookout for volunteers — if you are interested, let one of the team know or contact the office. There are no skills required; the team are very adept at equipping you with all the barista skills required!

A quick reminder that any community member who volunteers at BNPS needs to complete our volunteer induction. We will be running more sessions soon — keep an eye out on Compass for the times.

Helping our children safely navigate the digital world is of paramount importance to all parents, carers and educators. At BNPS we follow the Victorian Curriculum 2.0, ensuring our students are equipped with the skills and knowledge to safely use digital technology at school. For families, the eSafety Commissioner website is a brilliant resource to help you support your child. It includes great resources and advice regarding implementing the age restrictions on social media that are now law in Australia.
