Learning Area News

Year 1 News

Literacy

In Literacy, students have been learning about spelling using 'ow’ as in cow and ‘ou' as in cloud. We have also learnt about using the suffix ‘ed’ for past tense. We have also been planning how to write a story.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, students have been learning about addition and subtraction. We have been using counters, number lines, tens frames and number bonds to practice adding and taking away.

Religion

In Religion our topic is ‘Grief and Loss’. We have explored change using The Very Hungry Caterpillar and through exploring the different seasons.

In Inquiry, students have been learning about the space. We have created planet key chains that look amazing!

At home you could reinforce learning by:

Literacy

  1. Find words in your take home reader with the suffix ‘ed'.
  2. Practice putting the tricky words before, after, these, work, baby and children into sentences.
  3. Listen to your child read their reader each night.

Numeracy

  1. Use household items such as fruit or toys to create a whole number and then subtract some items from this.
  2. Write these numbers as equations, using the subtraction and equals symbols.

Year 2 News

Literacy

In Literacy, during spelling, we have been exploring the digraphs ‘ph’ that makes the /f/ sound (phone, elephant, graph) and ‘oi’ (coin) ‘oy’(boy).

Grammar

During grammar, the students have built on their knowledge of adjectives to describe a noun by using more than one describing word.  Students explored the use of a comma when writing adjectives in a list.

Comprehension

During comprehension, the students have been using the strategy of inferring when reading. Students were using clues from the text and prior knowledge to infer a deeper meaning of the text.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, the students have been learning about fact families using addition and subtraction. For example, 7+3=10, 3+7=10, 10-7=3, 10-3=7. The students have also revised partitioning numbers using base 10 blocks. Students have added 2-digit numbers with and without regrouping.

Religion

In Religion our topic is ‘Grief and Loss’. The students all participated beautifully in our assembly prayer last Friday. We were very proud of the way they read and joined in the singing with matching actions.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students have been researching about a chosen planet in our solar system. We have used websites, books and fact sheets to help us create a poster.

At home you could reinforce learning by:

Literacy

  1. Write sentences to describe their favourite toy, food and sport using adjectives.
  2. Listen to your child read their reader each night. Students could practice using the ‘inferring’ strategy when reading by using clues and prior knowledge to answer questions about the text.
  3. Students are to practise reading and spelling the following ‘tricky’ words (tomorrow, cousin, school).

Numeracy

  1. Students practise drawing base ten blocks to add and subtract 2-digit numbers.
  2. Students write fact families with two addition and two subtraction problems. For example: 7+3=10, 3+7=10, 10-7=3, 10-3=7.

Year 4 News

As we approach the end of Term 2, we would like to congratulate our Grade 4 students on their hard work, persistence, and enthusiasm throughout the semester. It has been wonderful to see the growth students have demonstrated across all learning areas and the positive attitudes they continue to bring to the classroom each day.

School holidays begin this Friday, and we wish all students and families a safe, relaxing, and well-earned break. We hope everyone enjoys the opportunity to rest, recharge, and spend quality time together before returning refreshed for Term 3.

Below is an overview of our learning during the final weeks of term, along with some suggestions for supporting learning at home.

English

In English, students have completed their study of The Arrival by Shaun Tan. Throughout the unit, they developed strong inference and visual literacy skills by analysing the detailed illustrations and interpreting the story without the use of written text.

Building on this learning, students have completed their own narrative comics, carefully creating engaging storylines while using minimal words to communicate meaning. This has encouraged students to think creatively about how images, sequencing, and visual elements can support storytelling.

For the final week of term, students are beginning a poetry unit where they will explore different poetic forms and experiment with language to create their own poems.

Students have also continued to develop their spelling knowledge through the SpellEx program and have been regularly practising reading fluency to strengthen accuracy, expression, and confidence when reading aloud.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students have recently completed their learning on data representation, where they collected, organised, and interpreted information using a variety of graphs and displays.

Students are now applying their number knowledge to increasingly complex addition and subtraction tasks. They are using a range of mental and written strategies to solve multi-step problems and explain their mathematical thinking.

Religious Education

In Religious Education, students are continuing their learning about Mission and the Church. They have been exploring how people live out the values of faith, service, and compassion within their communities.

Students have also been engaging with a variety of children's Bible stories through reading and multimedia resources, helping them deepen their understanding of key messages and teachings from Scripture.

Science

In Science, students are continuing their investigations into distance forces. They are consolidating their understanding of how forces such as gravity and magnetism can affect objects without direct contact. This topic will continue until we begin a new area of study next term.

Humanities

In Humanities, students are continuing their inquiry into managing Earth's resources. They have been exploring sustainability, resource use, and environmental responsibility.

This unit will continue through the remainder of the term before students begin a new topic in Term 3.

At Home You Could Reinforce Learning By:

Independent Reading

Continue encouraging your child to read for 10–20 minutes each evening. Regular reading supports comprehension, vocabulary growth, fluency, and confidence.

Poetry Exploration

Read and share poems together at home. Discuss interesting language choices, rhyming patterns, and imagery. Encourage your child to write a short poem about their holidays or favourite activities.

Fluency Practice

Support reading fluency by having your child read aloud regularly. Repeated reading of familiar texts can help improve accuracy, pace, and expression.

Spelling Practice

Continue reviewing SpellEx words and common spelling patterns. Short, regular practice sessions can help strengthen spelling retention and confidence.

Mathematics

Practise addition and subtraction facts and encourage your child to solve real-world problems involving money, time, or measurements. Discussing different strategies can help build flexibility and confidence in mathematical thinking.

We thank all families for their continued support throughout Term 2 and look forward to another exciting semester of learning in Term 3. Have a wonderful and relaxing holiday break!

Year 5 News

The Year Five children have been busy working on various projects and tasks as we conclude what can only be described as a busy terms learning.

  • We have published character narratives written in the first person,
  • Created our own parables based on reconciliation and how we can be more like Jesus,
  • Worked on improving a local venue so that it can be more inclusive, sustainable and fair for all to use; and
  • Used mathematical thinking skills to solve problem and look for strategies that will help us win.

Now it's time to celebrate and rest.  We will be watching the Socceroo's play on Friday at 12:00 p.m. and there will be some hot treats to keep the spirits going.

We wish you all a safe and happy holiday.

Spend time resting and relaxing. Give you child 100% of your time.  That is no mobile phone! No devices in hand!

If you haven't already researched your family tree, then take some time to do so. What is a family tree?  Do you have one? Could you make your own.

Spend time reading with your child   - go the town library and see what is on offer.

Visit SAM and check out the current exhibits – Picasso – who?

Go to the park. Walk around the block. Ride a bike.  Just have fun and enjoy each other's company.

Enjoy.
