Sustainability @ TPPS

We had lots of fun raising money for the koalas in Grade 5 last week! The sun came out and every student challenged themselves to do their very best. Mr Van der Pol thought that I had taken over his job when he saw all the Grade 5s jogging and doing push ups under the new COLA. Not only that - but nearly every student can spell Phascolarctos cinereus, which is the scientific name for a koala!
Thank you to all of our generous sponsors. Together we have raised $1,171.50 for the Australian Koala Foundation!
With this contribution, we have adopted three koalas from the Ballarat Wildlife Park for one year. Their names are Muffin and her joey, Waffle and another joey called Star. We also had $211.50 left over to donate to the organisation.
We can support our koala populations by protecting their favourite trees, keeping them safe from predators like dogs, and watching out for them on the roads.
Well done, Grade 5!
The Prep students were busy planting bean seeds last week. They will be bringing them home before the holidays. To help them grow tall, the Preps know that we need to give them water and sunshine.
We read the story of Jack and The Beanstalk, but we are pretty sure our beans won’t grow that high!
In Grade 6, we noticed that there are Gang-gang cockatoos that regularly visit the trees outside the BER building. This is very special because these beautiful birds are listed as an endangered species.
One main reason for this is that it has become difficult for them to find old trees with nesting hollows. Many birds and mammals compete for these hollows to live in. Bushfires, logging and clearing dead trees have reduced the amount of trees available. A good way to support native birds and animals like possums is to leave some old trees in your area for them. It takes a long time for a tree to develop a useful hollow.
After the bushfires of 2019-2020, BirdLife Australia developed the Gang-gang Bushfire Recovery Project to help these lovely birds. If you would like to read more about it, head to https://www.birdsinbackyards.net/content/article/Recovering-habitat-Gang-gangs-after-bushfire
