Year 3 Community News

Dear Families,

Welcome to Term 2! We are incredibly proud of the way our Year 3 students continue to demonstrate our school values each day. Students have made a strong start to the year, and we are excited to build on this momentum throughout the term. Below is an overview of the key learning areas we will be focusing on.

Term 2 Overview

Literacy

This term in Literacy, students will engage in a CORE unit focused on rivers and mountains. Through this unit, students will build their knowledge of significant geographical features and develop an understanding of how rivers and mountains shape environments, influence climates, and impact the way people live. They will explore examples from around the world and begin to make connections between natural landscapes and human activity. 

Students will engage with a range of rich texts to support their learning and will participate in structured discussions to deepen their understanding. They will apply their knowledge through a variety of writing tasks, focusing on constructing clear sentences and organised paragraphs, while using topic-specific vocabulary accurately.

To enhance this learning, students will attend an excursion to the Melbourne Museum early in the term. This experience will provide a real-world context, allowing students to see and connect their classroom learning to real examples and deepen their understanding of the natural world.

Alongside this, students will continue to develop their reading and spelling skills through the Sounds-Write program. This explicit phonics approach supports students in understanding the relationship between sounds and written language, strengthening both decoding and encoding skills.

We will also continue building students’ knowledge of Morphology, helping them understand how words are formed through prefixes, suffixes, and base words. This supports vocabulary development, spelling accuracy, and reading comprehension.

Handwriting will remain a key focus, with students continuing to develop correct letter formation, fluency, and automaticity. This ensures they can write efficiently and focus on clearly expressing their ideas.

Mathematics

In Mathematics this term, students will focus on developing their understanding across key measurement and number concepts, with an emphasis on applying skills in meaningful contexts.

Students will explore length and mass, learning to measure, compare, and estimate using appropriate standard units. They will engage in hands-on activities to build a strong understanding of measurement and apply these skills to solve real-world problems.

In number, students will develop their understanding of multiplication and division. They will build fluency with basic number facts and learn to apply a range of strategies to solve problems efficiently. There will be a strong focus on understanding the relationship between multiplication and division, as well as explaining their thinking using appropriate mathematical language. 

Throughout all areas of Mathematics, students will be encouraged to reason, problem-solve, and communicate their thinking clearly, helping to build both confidence and deeper understanding.

Wellbeing

We will continue to support students in developing their social and emotional skills through our school values of Care, Personal Best, Courage, and Respect.

This term, there will be a focus on building positive relationships, developing independence, and strengthening students’ ability to manage themselves in a range of situations. Students will also explore how their actions impact others and continue to practise kindness and inclusion within the classroom and playground.

Reminders

📌 Morning Routine: Please ensure your child arrives on time and is ready to line up when the music plays.

📌 School Uniform: As the weather becomes cooler, please ensure all jumpers and jackets are clearly labelled. Please also check the timetable for P.E days and sports uniform requirements.

📌 Lunchboxes & Water Bottles: Please continue to provide healthy, rubbish-free lunch options and a water bottle each day.

📌 Reading Folders: Students should bring their reading folder each week to support learning at home and school.

📌 Upcoming Events: Please keep an eye on Xuno for important dates, including our excursion to the Melbourne Museum.
