Curriculum News
Dear Families,
We are incredibly proud of the positive start our Grade 1 students have made this year and the successful Term 1 they have completed. Throughout the term, students have established strong routines and consistently demonstrated Care and their Personal Best.
It has been fantastic to see friendships grow, our school values in action, and students developing confident and positive learning habits. We are very excited for Term 2 and look forward to a term filled with engaging learning experiences, growth, and achievement.
English
This term, students will continue developing their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through engaging and meaningful topics. Learning will focus on:
- Exploring informative texts about the extinction of dinosaurs and changes to the Earth over time
- Building vocabulary and comprehension through non-fiction texts
- Expanding sentences using conjunctions and subordinating conjunctions
- Using adjectives and verbs to add detail and interest to writing
- Writing clear Single Paragraph Outline (SPO) sentences
- Continuing to develop phonics knowledge and high-frequency word recognition to support reading and spelling.
Mathematics
This term, students will explore number and measurement through hands-on, practical activities. Learning will focus on:
- Addition and subtraction within 20 using a variety of strategies
- Understanding and giving directions (e.g. left, right, forward, backward)
- Measuring and comparing length using informal units
- Exploring mass (heavy/light) and capacity (full/empty) through practical activities
Wellbeing
We will continue to support students in developing their social and emotional skills through our school values of Kindness, Care, Respect, and Personal Best.
This term, we will focus on:
- Building positive friendships and working cooperatively
- Recognising and expressing emotions appropriately
- Developing independence in classroom routines
- Practising mindfulness and self-regulation strategies
Reminders
📌 Morning Routine: Please ensure your child arrives at school on time. Students should line up in roll order when the music plays and be ready to enter the classroom when the bell rings. If you arrive after the bell, you will need a late pass from the office.
📌 Reading Satchels: Please ensure your child brings their reading satchel with them to school on their library day.
📌 Lunchboxes & Water Bottles: Please provide healthy snacks, lunch each day, and a water bottle filled with water.

- Friday 1st May: Grade 1 Excursion – Dinosaur World, Somerville
- Friday 8th May: Mother’s Day Muffins (2:45 pm – 3:30 pm)
- Wednesday 13th May: School Photo Day
- Monday 8th June: King’s Birthday Public Holiday
- Friday 26th June: Last Day of Term
