Year 6 Community News

Hello everyone, and welcome to Term 2!

We’re very excited to continue the year with our fantastic Grade 6 students.

Term 2 is an important time for our senior students as they continue to build on the strong start they have made in Term 1 with their learning jorney in their final year of primary school.

Our Grade 6 students will continue to develop in their leadership roles, taking on greater responsibility and demonstrating initiative within our school community. We will keep encouraging them to reflect on their strengths, grow their confidence, and contribute positively as leaders. We have some exciting things happening in Term 2, such as our excursion to Scienceworks and School Athletics Day.

Term 2 Overview

ENGLISH

In English, Year 6 students will explore the concept of the Industrial Revolution during the first half of the term, examining how this period of rapid change transformed the way people lived and worked. Students will engage with a range of informative and narrative texts, responding through note taking, discussion and writing to build their understanding of key ideas such as innovation, migration, and changes to society, making connections to the modern world.

In the second half of the term, students will investigate the topic of Natural Disasters. Through a variety of texts, students will deepen their comprehension skills by analysing how events such as earthquakes, floods, and bushfires impact communities and environments. They will respond through thoughtful discussion and written tasks, developing their vocabulary and understanding while exploring cause and effect, and making real-world connections.

MATHEMATICS

In Mathematics this term, Year 6 students will explore a range of number and geometry concepts through hands-on learning and problem-solving tasks. These concepts include:

Transformations

Students will investigate transformations by exploring how shapes can be translated, reflected, and rotated. They will describe and create patterns using transformations, developing their spatial reasoning and understanding of symmetry in both mathematical and real-world contexts.

Fractions

Students will deepen their understanding of fractions by comparing, ordering, and representing them in different ways. They will explore equivalent fractions and apply their knowledge to solve problems, making connections between fractions, division, and real-life situations.

Time

Students will build their understanding of time by reading, interpreting, and solving problems involving timetables, elapsed time, and durations. They will apply these skills to real-world contexts, developing accuracy and efficiency in their calculations.

Addition and Subtraction of Decimals

Students will develop their skills in adding and subtracting decimal numbers, with a focus on place value and accuracy. They will apply these skills to solve real-world problems, explain their strategies, and check the reasonableness of their answers.

Across all topics, students will be encouraged to explain their thinking, justify their strategies, and make connections between different areas of mathematics to deepen their understanding.

Wellbeing

Our school values remain at the heart of everything we do: RESPECT, KINDNESS, CARE, and PERSONAL BEST. Alongside these, we foster our four learning dispositions: COMMITMENT, CURIOSITY, COURAGE, and COLLABORATION.

This term, we are highlighting Turrun’s value of Care and how it can be practised beyond the classroom. At home, families can support this by encouraging children to look out for others, show empathy, and offer help when it is needed. Simple actions such as checking in on a sibling, helping with household tasks, or being mindful of others’ feelings all help to build a strong sense of care.

Parents and carers can model this value by demonstrating compassion, actively listening, and supporting others in both words and actions. These everyday moments help children understand that care is shown through kindness, responsibility, and the way we support those around us.

Reminders

• PE sessions take place on a THURSDAY while year level sport takes place on a FRIDAY, students should be in full sports uniform on these days to ensure they are ready to participate. 

• Our library sessions take place every TUESDAY. On this day, students should bring their reading satchels so they can borrow and take-home new reading materials. At home reading is encouraged and we ask students to log this in their diaries. We will endeavour to check diaries every Friday
