Year 5 Community News

Hello everyone, and welcome to Term 2!

We’re very excited to continue the year with our fantastic Grade 5 students.

Term 2 is an important time as students build on the strong start they made in Term 1 and continue their learning journey. This term provides valuable opportunities for students to strengthen their skills, grow in confidence, and take on new challenges.

Our Grade 5 students will continue to develop their independence and leadership skills, showing responsibility and initiative within the classroom and the wider school community. We will encourage them to reflect on their strengths, set goals, and contribute positively to group learning. We also have some exciting events to look forward to in Term 2, including our excursion to Scienceworks and School Athletics Day.

Term 2 Overview

ENGLISH

In English, Year 5 students will explore the topic of Expanding Empires and Interactions: Renaissance & Mesoamerica. Through a variety of texts, students will deepen their comprehension skills by exploring how societies developed, interacted, and influenced one another during these periods. They will analyse themes such as cultural exchange, innovation, and power, and respond through discussion and written tasks. Students will continue to build their vocabulary and understanding while making connections between historical events and their impact on the modern world.

During the second half of the term, students will learn about Diverse Environments, examining how different environments around the world shape the way people live. Students will engage with a range of informative and narrative texts, responding through note-taking, discussion, and writing to build their understanding of key ideas such as climate, sustainability, and human interaction with the environment, while making connections to their own experiences and the wider world.

MATHEMATICS

In Mathematics this term, Year 6 students will explore a broad range of number, measurement, and geometry concepts through hands-on learning and problem-solving tasks. These concepts include:

Multiplication and Division

Students will strengthen their understanding of multiplication and division by applying efficient strategies to solve problems. They will explore the relationship between these operations and use them in real-world contexts, including connections to fractions and measurement.

Fractions

Students will deepen their understanding of fractions by comparing, ordering, and representing them in different ways. They will investigate equivalent fractions and apply their knowledge to solve problems, making links between fractions, division, and everyday situations.

Length, Mass, Volume and Capacity

Students will develop their measurement skills by estimating, measuring, and converting between units of length, mass, and volume/capacity. They will apply these skills to practical, real-life scenarios, building accuracy and confidence in using appropriate units.

Perimeter and Area

Students will explore how to calculate perimeter and area of a range of shapes. They will investigate the relationship between these concepts and apply their understanding to solve practical problems involving space and design.

Across all topics, students will be encouraged to explain their thinking, justify their strategies, and make connections between different areas of mathematics to deepen their understanding.

Wellbeing

Our school values remain at the heart of everything we do: RESPECT, KINDNESS, CARE, and PERSONAL BEST. Alongside these, we foster our four learning dispositions: COMMITMENT, CURIOSITY, COURAGE, and COLLABORATION.

This term, we are highlighting Turrun’s value of Kindness and our learning disposition of Collaboration, and how both can be practised beyond the classroom. At home, families can support this by encouraging children to include others, work together, and show empathy in everyday situations. Simple actions such as helping a sibling, sharing responsibilities, listening to others’ ideas, and working as part of a team all help to build a strong sense of kindness and collaboration.

Parents and carers can model these by demonstrating compassion, cooperating with others, and valuing different perspectives. These everyday moments help children understand that kindness and collaboration are shown through respectful interactions, teamwork, and the way we support and include those around us.

Reminders

• PE sessions take place on a Monday while year level sport takes place on a FRIDAY, students should be in full sports uniform on these days to ensure they are ready to participate. 

• Our library sessions take place every TUESDAY. On this day, students should bring their reading satchels so they can borrow and take home new reading materials. At home reading is encouraged and we ask students to log this in their diaries. We will endeavour to check diaries every Friday
