Year 4 Community News

Dear Families,

Welcome to Term 2! We are incredibly proud of how well our Year 4 students have continued to grow and demonstrate our school values throughout Term 1. We are looking forward to another engaging and purposeful term of learning. Below is an overview of what students will be focusing on this term.

Term 2 Overview

Literacy

This term in Literacy, students will engage in a CORE unit centred on Government and Laws, as well as the arrival of the first Europeans to Australia. Throughout this unit, students will develop a strong understanding of why laws are created, how they help maintain order and fairness, and the different roles within Australia’s system of government. They will also explore how early European arrival impacted Australia, including the changes it brought to people, communities, and the environment.

Students will build their knowledge through rich texts, discussion, and explicit teaching, and will apply this understanding in their reading and writing tasks. They will practise constructing clear sentences and paragraphs, using evidence from what they have learned to support their ideas.

To enrich this learning, we will be visiting the Melbourne Immigration Museum early in the term. This excursion will provide students with a real-world connection to our studies, allowing them to deepen their understanding of migration, identity, and how diverse experiences have shaped Australia’s society today.

Alongside this, we will continue to explicitly teach and embed our Morphology program. Students will develop a deeper understanding of how words are constructed through prefixes, suffixes, and base words, supporting both their spelling and vocabulary development. This knowledge will be applied across reading and writing tasks to strengthen comprehension and expression. 

Students will also continue with Spelling Mastery, focusing on accurate spelling patterns and rules, and Handwriting, where they will build fluency, consistency, and automaticity. This ensures students can focus more on the quality and complexity of their ideas when writing.

Mathematics

In Mathematics this term, students will focus on developing key skills across several interconnected areas, with an emphasis on both conceptual understanding and application.

Students will explore multiplication in depth, building fluency with times tables and developing efficient mental and written strategies to solve problems. They will apply their understanding in a range of contexts, including word problems, to strengthen their ability to reason and explain their thinking.

In our data unit, students will learn how to collect, organise, and represent information using tables and a variety of graphs. They will also interpret data by identifying patterns, trends, and drawing simple conclusions, building their ability to analyse information critically.

In Geometry, students will investigate angles by identifying, comparing, and classifying them (such as right, acute, and obtuse angles). They will explore how angles are used in everyday contexts and begin to measure and describe them more precisely.

Additionally, students will explore maps, developing their understanding of direction, location, and scale. They will learn how to read and interpret maps, use grid references, and describe positions using appropriate mathematical language, strengthening their spatial awareness and real-world application of these skills.

Throughout all areas, there will be a strong focus on mathematical communication, with students encouraged to explain their thinking, justify their strategies, and engage in problem-solving tasks.

Wellbeing

We will continue to support students in developing their social and emotional skills through our school values of Care, Personal Best, Courage, and Respect.

This term, our focus will be on building strong communication skills, supporting students to express their ideas clearly and respectfully. We will also continue to develop strategies for managing conflict and strengthening positive relationships with peers.
