Learning and Teaching

Teaching & Learning
Olivia Hodgetts
It is hard to believe that we have come to the end of Term 1. Where did that time go?
It is rewarding to reflect back over the past ten weeks and celebrate the great teaching and learning that has occured at St Mary's. On a personal note, I have enjoyed being back in the classroom (or artroom) and watching the Foundation students share their newly aquired knowledge ......just ask a Foundation student what ROY G BIV stands for ......they will certainly be keen to explain the colours of the rainbow!
I know that when it comes to the school holidays, children often report that they are 'bored'. Below, is a list of fun and free activities to keep their minds active over the break!
Be safe and see you all ready to roll in Term 2.
| visit a local library | cook a meal for your family | visit a new playground |
| enjoy a picnic in the park | create an origami animal | make your own scavenger hunt |
| play a board game | visit a museum | go on a family bushwalk |
| go for a bike ride | conduct a science experiment | create a piece of artwork |
| make and fly a kite | make a lego construction | build a fort in the backyard |
Mathematics
Mr Joel Magnabosco
We have had a fantastic term of maths learning throughout Term 1 at St Mary's.
Students spent time counting, reading, writing, comparing, ordering, modelling, drawing, renaming, expanding and identifying numbers. We have seen some great growth in Place Value understanding across the school. This hard work will be followed up regularly throughout the year as we review the content that we have taught in order to strengthen the learning that has begun to occur.
Melbourne Archdiocese of Catholic Schools (MACS) have shared some resources to help in strengthening students' number sense at home. There are five practical, easy-to-follow videos for parents and carers of Foundation to Year 2 students, aligned with evidence-informed teaching practices to reinforce classroom learning. The videos offer clear explanations and practical demonstrations designed to boost students’ confidence, fluency and understanding.
- Partitioning (part-part-whole)
We will kick off Term 2 by learning about addition and subtraction across the school, before moving into some other areas of maths, such as measurement, statistics and space.
