Prep- So far in our Prep community, we have hit the ground running! Our students are eagerly diving into their Auslan learning journey, and it’s incredible to see their progress. They are developing their receptive skills, which means they can now understand basic instructions and recognise Auslan signs – how cool is that?
One of the exciting focuses of our learning this term is colours! Our Prep students are beginning to explore different colours in Auslan, which will be an important foundation for their future learning. Later in the year, they will take this knowledge even further by linking their facial expressions to their favourite and least favourite colours. This skill is a key part of Auslan communication, as facial expressions add meaning and emotion to signing.
We are so proud of our students for their enthusiasm and determination in learning Auslan. Their confidence is growing every day, and we can’t wait to see what they achieve next!
Stay tuned for more updates on our Prep community’s Auslan adventures.
Years 1-2- Our Year 1/2 learning community is stepping up their Auslan skills in an exciting way this term! With a focus on "All About Me," students are working towards the goal of introducing themselves to a Deaf person. This is a fantastic opportunity for them to build confidence in their signing abilities and deepen their understanding of Auslan communication.
So far, our students have mastered key phrases such as "My name what" (using correct Auslan grammar), "My age," "I born when," and "I live where." In the coming weeks, they will be expanding their knowledge by learning how to sign about their families and hobbies – an exciting next step in their learning journey!
What an incredible achievement so far! We are so proud of our Year 1/2 students for their enthusiasm and dedication to learning Auslan. Keep up the amazing work, and we can’t wait to see what they accomplish next!
Y7- The Year 7 community has begun their Auslan learning with enthusiasm! This term, their focus is on understanding the basics of Auslan and how their signs come together to form ‘words.’ It’s been an exciting start, and students are already building a strong foundation in their learning.
So far, they have explored three different handshapes and the signs that belong to them. This knowledge is a crucial first step, allowing them to develop a deeper understanding of how Auslan works. With these skills, they can now begin to climb the rungs of their Auslan learning journey, gaining confidence and fluency along the way.
We are so proud of their progress and can’t wait to see how their skills continue to grow. Keep up the great work, Year 7!
Y8- Year 8 students are hitting the ground running with their Auslan learning this term! Building on their Semester 2, Unit 2 work on "My Weird Family," they are now applying their skills to their new topic, "All About Me." This is an exciting opportunity for them to deepen their understanding and use their knowledge in a meaningful way.
To correctly introduce themselves to a Deaf person, students are drawing on key Auslan concepts such as list buoys, HOLM (Handshape, Orientation, Location, Movement), NMF (Non-Manual Features), and Auslan syntax. These essential building blocks help them form clear and effective signed communication.
It’s fantastic to see their confidence growing as they refine their skills. We are proud of the enthusiasm and effort they are putting into their learning—keep up the great work Year 8!
