Year 9 student, Elsie P recently travelled Europe as part of an Australian Football Team. During the holidays, Wanderers Australia took two teams of talented young football players from all over Australia to Europe to compete against some of the best teams in the region.
The girls departed from Sydney and, after a long 36 hours of travel—including 10 hours exploring Tokyo at night—arrived at London, Heathrow. The goal was clear: to play football with some of the UK’s finest!
The tour began in London, where they spent the first three days exploring the city, celebrating New Year's, taking in the sights, and recovering from a bit of jet lag. In the following days, the girls headed north of London to Leeds, Bradford, and York.
With the guidance of coaches, including former Matilda’s player Gemma Simon who currently plays for the Newcastle Jets, the teams played six games throughout their time in England and one in France.
The conditions were tough and with games held at night the temperatures dropped below zero, the coldest -6°C! In spite of this, the girls dug deep and performed exceptionally well, demonstrating their grit in challenging English weather. The scores reflected their incredible Aussie talent, and they even won a few games!
The girls attended two Premier League matches, including the Premiership final between Manchester City and West Ham, and had the privilege of being the Guard of Honour for Millwall FC at their Premiership game. A highlight of the experience was making friends with the mascot!
One thing Elsie learned was that English teams are very passionate about their football!
During their travels and between games, the teams visited numerous iconic locations, including Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, the Tower of London, and the famous Borough Market. To top it off, they enjoyed a tour of Liverpool FC. They also had to pleasure of enjoying parts of England in the snow.
The games featured representative teams from across England and France, and they had the privilege of playing against clubs like Aston Villa, Bradford FC, Middlesex, and Solihull Sporting FC—the age champions in their league. Elsie had the opportunity to play in the U17 group, which was both challenging and exciting for her. A standout moment for her was scoring the equalising goal in their final game in France during the last five minutes of play!
The final five days of the tour were spent in France, where they visited more iconic sites, including the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, and the battlefields at Villers-Bretonneux and of course- visited all the patisseries.
When asked about her favourite part of the tour, Elsie responded, “Playing soccer; the games were amazing.” Her least favourite part? “The plane ride and the plane food.”
Elsie returned home after another long 32 hours of travel, bringing back incredible memories and a host of new friends from across the country—some of whom she will compete against this season. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that she will surely remember forever.
Well done Elsie!
