Year 10 - 12 Community

March 2025

Year 10

In Year 10 Accelerated Mathematics, we have been investigating Simultaneous Equations and the three methods used to find a solution - the graphical method, the elimination method and the substitution method. As a way of demonstrating their understanding, the students undertook an activity which saw them get into groups of 3 or 4 and work on a particular problem. They need to work collaboratively to formulate two solutions - one algebraic and one graphical, and present these in the form of an instructional poster. The layout, presentation and level of detail was up to each group along with the roles that each individual would take on.

The photos show the level of collaboration work team work that each group entered into.

Here are some student reflections on the task:

“I liked the teamwork aspect of it all, as we all had a role to carry out and we got to work to each others strengths” (Nyi)

“I was able to bring my artistic skills into the task. I enjoyed sharing ideas with like minded people.” (Dream)

“I liked working with others so I can see consider other points of view and strengthen my own ideas” (Ruby)

“The ability to work together on a common solution was refreshing” (Hanin)

“I felt that my understanding improved by discussing ideas with others” (Archer)

VM / VPC Community Update

Welcome

It’s been a fantastic start to 2025 in the VCE Vocation Major (VM) and Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC) programs. Our senior students are settling in quickly and embracing their role as leaders of the college.

Our Year 12 students have returned with a strong sense of routine, they are consistently demonstrating respect and pride, ensuring they are in full uniform. Their positive attitude has set the tone for a great year ahead.A big shout-out to our Year 11s, who have made a smooth transition into senior school. Adjusting to a new timetable structure and the added responsibilities of VCE, VM, and VPC is no small feat, and they are already demonstrating their ambition, resilience and commitment.

Curriculum update

On Fridays, students participate in a Certificate in Public Safety, our Year 12s have kicked off their second year, while the Year 11s have just begun their journey. Practical sessions have introduced students to fire truck operations, emergency drills, and equipment handling—though not everyone managed to stay dry!

In Literacy Inquiry, Year 11 students have been exploring personal identity, reflecting on their own experiences and perspectives. Meanwhile, in Year 12 VM Literacy Inquiry, Malinda Meredith guided students through an engaging lesson on social advantages and disadvantages. Students took on different “characters,” such as a homeless person, and stepped forward or backward based on how various life scenarios would impact them. This thought-provoking activity encouraged critical thinking and empathy.

Over in Year 12 VPC Numeracy, Ben Riley and his students took their learning beyond the classroom, applying numeracy skills in real-world contexts by measuring distances around the school.

Mondays have also been filled with energy as students embark on their Enterprise Adventures. With projects including a small business, café operations, the bike hub, and a car wash, students are developing entrepreneurial skills and real-world business experience.

Most notably, our senior students have also started their VET studies, with many heading off-site to external training providers. They have shown great maturity and professionalism, proudly representing our school in the broader community.

VCE

An update from the VCE community Leader Mr Jessie Melnik

Term 1 is well underway and our VCE students have hit the ground running across all of their classes. With major assessments well under way the students have been building strong study habits. Throughout our mentor program students have been undergoing study skills sessions. In year 11 this has been focused on how to study effectively utilising various techniques and systematic processes, while the year 12’s have been focusing on breaking down how to study in the lead up assessments, as well as time management leading up to an examination.

Student Report

We have started the year off strong with many ideas already gaining traction and some inspiring advocacy being undertaken by our leaders to ensure the student body has a voice. We have started populating  our “2025 Graduates Wall” with childhood photos of students and are working to get the VCE staff involved too. We have managed to acquire some plants to add some vibrancy to the Study Area and have started working towards a major project for the term. Watch this space! (Student Leaders)

Term one we have been lucky enough to have an information session for our VCE cohort from two of Victoria’s most utilised education providers; Deakin & the Gordon. They spoke to the cohort about the different career paths offered and gave valuable insight on what life after school might look like. Students walked away with a greater understanding of what kind of options are available to them in the Geelong region as well as what kind of learning styles both organisations offer.

Homework Club

Run on Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays between 3:10 & 4:30. This has been an opportunity many have taken up, with teaching staff available for any assistance, the VCE cohort have been filling the study space since week one, setting up positive study habits and catching up on any missed or outstanding work.

Drama Excursion

On Wednesday 12th February the Year 10 Impact and Year 11 & 12 VCE Drama students travelled to the Arts Centre Melbourne to see Dear Evan Hanson.  The show began with Beau Woodbridge playing the titular character until an unexpected intermission only sometime into the musical.  When the show resumed Evan Hanson was replaced by the Lawrence Hawkins the standby.  Nevertheless, our students were impressed with the performance and reflected on the effective aesthetic and design choices implemented in it.  The show contains some heavy themes and concepts and our students dealt with these maturely and prompted some fantastic discussion on the train home
