Safer Internet Day

The other day, a police woman named Verity came to our school to talk about cybersafety. We learnt about how to find and report cyberbullies, phishers, scammers, and protect ourselves against hackers.

We also learnt about good passwords, and all safety precautions, like not showing personal info in your username, and not uploading a picture of your house address, school logo or other info. For example, instead of just having lower case letters, we could use characters, or numbers, or upper case letters. We looked at examples of people who could be scammed, cyberbullied, phished, or hacked, and how not to. We even got to hold some real handcuffs! we also found out about how easy it is to get scammed.  If you were to see something like dodgy emails or websites, or pop-ups that you won a prize asking for personal info, it's most likely a scam. The worst cases are when people are playing games, because they're in the heat of a game when they get a message to chat and accept, not thinking of the consequences. In this scenario, you should show a trusted adult, because this is likely to be someone you don't know. This is likely to happen in Roblox, a certain version of Minecraft, and YouTube comment areas. If you are already in a chat with someone you have never met, look out for suspicious messages like, "I failed my maths test" when it's still school holidays. If not, look out for strangers,

"Stranger danger!". If you do see weird messages, be sure to report it to the police. Scammers will try to "speak your language", so if you see a comment that's using waaay too much slang, report them. The police will then look into the account, and see if they have a criminal history. If you're reading this, be careful online. Look out for scammers and all that suspicious behaviour!
