News From Around The School

Namoi Jobs & Trade Show

Mid-term, many of our students attended the annual Namoi Jobs & Trade Show in Narrabri. Students got to see many of our local employers’ exhibitions and talk with their staff about what each company does and the types of careers on offer. Organised by the Narrabri Industrial Network, the event is an excellent way for students to begin engaging with local employers and employment opportunities. Thank you to the Narrabri Industrial Network, the Narrabri Shire Council and the many local employers who make this annual event possible, and to the Lions Club of Narrabri who cooked a delicious BBQ lunch for everyone.

2024 Wee Waa Show

Congratulations to WWHS students; Dakota Welsh, Cassidy Welsh, Matilda Currey and Emily Hartnett on your participation in The Land Sydney Royal AgShows NSW Young Woman Award this past weekend in the lead-up to the Wee Waa Show Society’s annual show. Photos courtesy of John Burgess.

Our Wee Waa High School Cattle Team participated in the Junior Judging and Junior Parading events during the first day of the Show. The cattle were perfectly prepared by students who enjoyed showing them off for Judge, Grace Collins (Armidale). Ms Collins was a highly engaged and informative judge and students really appreciated and gained a great deal from her valuable feedback. Incidentally, Ms Collins was the winner of the 2024 RM Williams RAS Rural Achiever at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Our MC students created a stunning array of floral arrangements for this year's horticulture section. The flowers were donated by Mrs Jan Haire who also taught students some floral arrangement techniques before they put their learning into action to create these beautiful pieces. MC Class SLSO, Mrs Jackie Orman selected cups from her kitchen to suit the interests of each student in the class that could be used at the base. MC Class Teacher, Ms Adele Roscoe said students really enjoyed learning about arranging flowers and being able to create work to submit in this year’s show.

Congratulations to the many Wee Waa High School students who submitted art work in this year's Wee Waa Show. A considerable number of first, second and third places were awarded to participating students.

This year also saw the introduction of the Lizzie Reynolds Memorial Art, courtesy of WWHS Teacher, Mr Andrew Wales. The prize was awarded to Year 11 student, Tiara Crocker.

NSW School Merino Wether Challenge

This year's NSW School Merino Wether Challenge created an excellent learning and skills development opportunity for several of our Primary Industries students.  Key to success is the weight the sheep reach at the end of the Challenge, along with fleece length and quality and carcass composition. The optimum results in each of these areas are achieved through the diet of the sheep and with this in mind, significant consideration is given each year by our Ag Teacher, Ms Bray and her Stage 5 Ag students as to what diet regime will produce the best results.

Ms Bray and her students take into consideration the performance of the sheep entered into prior year's Challenges, feedback from the judges, new information available and cost to benefit consideration.

The Challenge takes place in Dubboi each year and once again commenced with an enjoyable day of learning touring Fletchers meat works, McDonald Wool and the Dubbo saleyards. This was followed by two days of competition and workshops, some including fleece judging, sheep judging, Fletchers talk and a careers panel.

Wee Waa High students took third prize in the Wool Value section for Zone 4 and learnt a lot about wether selection and nutrition that will stand them in good sted for next year.

Year 10 Work Experience

Year 10 work experience commenced towards the end of this term, and I’d like to extend my gratitude to the employers in the Narrabri Shire and beyond who hosted our students. Your support has provided invaluable learning opportunities, helping students gain insight into various industries and role types, while offering them hands-on experience.

Student Representative Council

Our Student Representative Council (SRC) has had a productive term. Under the guidance of our SRC Coordinator, Mrs. Mallinson, their leadership has been outstanding. Their efforts in raising awareness and funds for the World’s Greatest Shave, benefiting blood cancer research, resulted in an impressive $3,918. Additionally, their support during the Year 7 information night and their help with preparing and serving the BBQ dinner was greatly appreciated.

Quad Bike Course A Great Success

A group of our senior Primary Industries class travelled to Tamworth this week to undertake an Operation of Quad Bike course. This course gives the students a certificate in safe quad bike operations. All students expressed how much they got out of participating in the course. We'd like to send a massive thank you to our facilitators, Paddy and Dave from New England TAFE, our students had a fabulous experience.
