Tournament of Minds
Our Tournament of Minds teams represented Mount Alvernia exceptionally well on the weekend, showcasing their brilliant talents in STEM, Literature and Social Sciences. Their dedication over the past 6 weeks has been exceptional including weekly meetings, script writing, making prototypes and models as well as working together as a team.
This group of students have continuously proven their skills in creativity, problem solving, working independently, organisation, teamwork, leadership, communication... the list goes on!
All teams were recognised on the day with our teams placing in the following areas:
Language Literature - 1st place
STEM - 1st place
Social Sciences - Honours
Our Language Literature & STEM teams will continue onto the State Finals this weekend on the Gold Coast. We are so proud of all these students and know the skills they have learnt will ensure they continue to grow and develop as critical thinkers and problem solvers.
Debating Mentors
This year, our Year 10 Debating teams volunteered to mentor coach the St Anthony’s Year 5 & 6 Debating teams. This has involved heading over the St Anthony’s at a lunch break to guide and teach these students about creating valid arguments and structuring their speeches. Thank you to Ms Nicole Bradford for supporting these students and we look forward to seeing this connection grow!
Queensland Catholic Colleges Music Festival
Written by Sienna, FCIP Captain
Over the weekend of Week 6, students across Mount Alvernia, Padua College, and St Anthony’s participated in the annual Queensland Catholic Colleges Music Festival (QCMF) held at Villanova College, Coorparoo. This competition aims to improve the playing and musicianship of Catholic schools across Queensland by providing in depth feedback on each group's repertoire. During music lessons and rehearsals, students have hopefully heard what feedback the judges had for all choirs and ensembles which will surely be implemented through rehearsals.
Additionally, judges score the groups as either gold, silver, or bronze depending on a set of criteria. Since this competition is about individual ensembles, groups are only compared to themselves, and the aim is not to compete against others. To achieve gold does not mean perfection, in fact, even groups who achieve gold have substantial feedback to fine tune their playing or singing. During this competition, across FCIP and our Mount Alvernia College Choir we received 12 gold awards, 13 silver awards, and only 1 bronze award demonstrating the quality of the music program at Mount Alvernia and the FCIP.
This competition showcases the talent that all our musicians have, giving everyone the opportunity to perform in front of a crowd without the pressure of placing in a competition. If you missed the wonderful performances of the groups across QCMF, please come along to the end of year concerts for both senior FCIP ensembles and choir that are coming up in the next few weeks.
