In today's rapidly changing world, numeracy skills are more critical than ever. Whether solving complex problems, managing personal finances, or making informed decisions, a strong foundation in mathematics is essential. Recognising this need, Mount Alvernia College is continually working to enhance numeracy across all grade levels through the implementation of a Whole-School Numeracy Program.
What is a Whole-School Numeracy Program?
A Whole-School Numeracy Program is an approach that ensures every student, regardless of their year level or ability, receives consistent, high-quality math instruction. It emphasises the importance of numeracy not just within math classes but across all subjects. This approach helps students see the relevance of math in everyday life and builds their confidence in applying these skills in various contexts.
Key components of Our Numeracy Program
- Consistent curriculum integration: Our program emphasises consistent curriculum integration by incorporating numeracy skills across all subject areas, not just mathematics. For example, Year 7 students studying biomechanics in Health and Physical Education (HPE) this term delve into Newton's laws of motion, where they apply their understanding of algebra by substituting values into formulas to solve real-world problems. Similarly, Year 9 students engage in data analysis within their Science Chemistry Unit, applying their understanding of Measurement Errors, learned in Term 1 Mathematics, to create error bars and utilising their knowledge of straight lines from Term 2 Mathematics to analyse linear relationships. This integrated approach allows students to see the practical applications of numeracy, highlighting its relevance beyond the classroom.
- Targeted support for students: Recognising that students learn at different paces, our program includes targeted support for those who may struggle with numeracy. This semester, we are offering a Numeracy Intervention program for selected Year 7 and Year 8 students to provide additional support based on their individual learning needs, as identified through school and diagnostic assessments. We aim to build a strong numeracy foundation for every student, regardless of their starting point.
- Teacher professional development: To deliver effective numeracy instruction, our teachers undergo continuous professional development. This semester, Mathematics teachers at Mount Alvernia College are participate in a program designed to embed and enhance mathematical reasoning into lessons. This initiative is closely aligned with our focus on numeracy, as it equips teachers with strategies to deepen students' understanding of numerical concepts, improve their ability to reason mathematically, and apply these skills across various contexts. By integrating these approaches into everyday lessons, we aim to strengthen students' overall numeracy, ensuring they are well-prepared for future academic and real-world challenges.
- Diagnostic Pat M Testing: To review the progress of students in key areas, against diagnostic standards, so that we can better target areas for improvement.
