Year 5/6 Team News

with Christina, Emma, Molly, Bianca I, Bianca R, Matt & Brittlee

Hello Year 5/6 families,

Another fortnight has flown by once again and we have completed plenty of great work.

On Tuesday, we had our first health education session. Both Grade 5 and 6s have come home with some homework to complete and bring back for next Tuesday’s sessions. It involves speaking to a trusted adult at home and completing a questionnaire.

Also on Tuesday 11th, we commemorated Remembrance Day with a ceremony hosted by our 5/6 JSC leaders who did a fabulous job.

Coming up

In Week 7, on Monday 17th Nov, our Grade 6 students who will be attending Willy High in 2026 will be attending a transition session. They will spend the morning at Bayview Campus exploring the campus and experiencing some classes, as well as getting to know key staff. This will be a great opportunity to prepare for the upcoming Orientation Day on Tuesday 9th December. They will be walking to WHS as a cohort with staff, departing at 9:10am and returning at 11am. If your child is attending a different high school, they will remain at school as normal.

Also on Monday 17th Nov at 10am, our Grade 5s and Grade 4s will meet for the first of 4 transition sessions. It is one of the many ways we look to support students at WPS with transitioning between year levels, spaces and teachers.

Over the next fortnight there will be lots of correspondence coming out via Compass for upcoming events during Celebration Week (Week 11). This includes key information and volunteer sign-ups for our 2 excursions, Adventure Park in Wallington (17th Dec) and Williamstown Beach (18th Dec). If you have any questions about volunteering, please reach out to your child’s teacher.

Please keep up to date with the Calendar below as we are continually updating this.

What’s Coming Up in the Classroom in the Next Fortnight?

Reading: In weeks 7 and 8, students are exploring what makes a great picture story book. We will look at a variety of texts and authors and how they use carefully chosen description to deliver a clear theme and moral.

Writing: We are finalising our procedural texts and publishing these in our inquiry groups. Many are choosing to use Canva to publish to create a professional finish. In weeks 7 and 8 we will commence drafting our Buddy Books- picture story books written and published by our 5/6 students that are personalised and given to their Prep and 1 buddy as a parting gift on Buddy Ice Cream Day in Week 11.

Maths: Classes are completing their work on number patterns and commencing a week of revision based on recent assessments undertaken.

Inquiry: We are busy working in groups, designing and building a board game that features a variety of electrical circuits. Students are now finalising their constructions and publishing their rules. We will be aiming to trial our games prior to Game Day which has tentatively been booked in for Friday 5th December.

Willy Kids: In weeks 7 & 8, Willy Kids are Leaders. We will be looking at what makes a great and begin discussions about 2026 leadership roles on offer.

Respectful Relationships: Will pause during Health Ed weeks. These will resume in Week 9.

Health Education: The 90-minute sessions will take place each Tuesday during weeks 6,7 & 8. We encourage you to have open discussions at home to support their learning.
