Meet the new Plants and the Great Aussie Bird Count
On Friday, 24th October, the Environmental Council took part in the Great Aussie Bird Count. Over the day, volunteers, as well as two Year 8 Science classes went out into the school grounds to count the birds which were observed over a period of 20 minutes. The day was a great success, with a large number of birds being counted. The data collected by the students becomes part of a nationwide data base. The Environmental Council took part in one of Australia's biggest citizen science events of the year. A special thanks goes to Ms Rebecca Hannan for playing a pivotal role in organising this event. The great success of this event will see the school take part next year.
During Winter, the Environmental Council volunteers planted a wide range of seeds. At the start of Spring, many of the seeds have germinated and there are a number of new seedlings starting to grow. Currently, there are a large number of Casuarinas, as well as Australian Hop Bushes and Kurrajong trees. These plants will soon be placed near the bottom of the school, being part of the bush line that has been established over the last 3 years. Currently, many of the established plants have produced a large number of seeds, which are currently being collected. Next year, these seeds will be germinated with the aim of placing them along the creek line as part of the Regeneration Project.
