SUPER
STRENGTHS
At Lyndhurst Primary School, we are committed to supporting our students in developing positive character strengths that help them thrive both at school and in life. This fortnight, we are focusing on the Super Strength of PRUDENCE.
Prudence might sound like a big word, but it simply means making careful, thoughtful choices. It’s about thinking before we act, considering the consequences of our decisions, and choosing the option that keeps ourselves and others safe, happy, and on the right track. Prudence doesn’t mean being overly cautious or scared to try new things - it means pausing long enough to make a smart choice.
Students show prudence when they:
- Think before they speak or act
- Make plans and stick to them
- Consider how their choices might affect others
- Use time wisely and stay focused on goals
- Keep themselves safe by following rules and using good judgment
You can help your child strengthen this skill with simple, everyday strategies:
Model thinking aloud
Share your own decision-making process. For example:"I’m going to leave a bit earlier today so I’m not rushing."
Encourage planning
Ask your child what they need to pack or organise ahead of time - for sport days, homework, or outings.
Use gentle “pause and think” prompts
Questions like:
“What might happen if…?”
“Is there another choice you could make?”
“What would be the wisest option?”
- Celebrate good decisionsNotice and praise moments when they show good judgment.
Set routines
Predictable routines help children practise planning and follow-through.
Prudence is a wonderful strength that supports success in learning, friendships, and wellbeing. By working together at school and at home, we can help our students grow into thoughtful, confident decision-makers.
