Teen Mental Health First Aid training- Year 8

This week Woodmans Hill Secondary College kicks off Teen Mental Health First Aid training with our Year 8 students. This important program provides teenagers with the knowledge and skills to recognise when a friend might be experiencing a Mental Health problem or crisis and how to support them in seeking help from a trusted adult.

Young people often turn to their peers when they are stressed or upset, sometimes taking on more than they should. This course empowers students to respond safely and appropriately, helping them understand that they are not alone and that support is available.

The course includes discussions around a range of Mental Health topics, including suicide. While this can be confronting for some, most young people report feeling empowered and reassured by learning how to respond if someone they know is struggling. The program is not being introduced in response to any specific incident but rather as part of our school’s ongoing commitment to promoting positive Mental Health and Wellbeing among all students.

We are excited to have three staff members trained to facilitate the program Jessica Hollands, Claire Blower and Megan Matthews.

Each week I will post the timetable on Compass and encourage Parents/Carers to check in with their young person after the session. Please do not hesitate to reach out to myself or Year 8 Coordinator, Cameron Robinson, should your child need further wellbeing support.

Uniform expectations

School uniform at Woodmans Hill Secondary College plays an important role in creating a sense of equality among students. It helps minimise the visible social and economic differences that can sometimes arise through fashion or branded clothing. When everyone is dressed the same, there’s less pressure to keep up with trends, reducing distractions and allowing students to focus more on learning and connection.

Wearing the school uniform with pride sends a strong message to our school and wider community. At Woodmans Hill Secondary College, our school uniform is more than just clothing, it’s a visible representation of our shared values, identity, and community spirit.

When students wear the school uniform, they step into a mindset of readiness and responsibility. Just as a uniform set’s expectations in professional workplaces, it signals that school is a place of purpose and learning. Consistent uniform standards help reinforce positive behaviours, routines, and respect for the learning environment.

We appreciate the ongoing support from families in ensuring students wear their full and correct uniform each day

Shipping Container Café Update

Works are well underway for the conversion of our shipping container - over the last few weeks we have had flooring and cabinetry specialist visit and measure the container ready for the ‘fit-out’ phase! Before we know it, we will be serving caffeinated drinks to staff and student will be experimenting with coffee art and frothing milk!
