Swimming Program

Our Swimming Program commenced this week for some grades and is running very smoothly. Students in grades Prep and 5/6 will start their program on Monday. Could you please ensure that you child has their swimming gear organised – swimming bag, bathers, towel, goggles (if desired) and thongs/sandals. All goggles need to be adjusted and fitting comfortably prior to coming to school. We also suggest that students bring an extra plastic bag to place their wet items in. Further information can be found on the Compass Parent Portal.

Junior School Athletics

The Junior Athletic Sports will be held on Monday the 15th of December, 9am at the Spring Gully Cricket Oval. This will provide each student within grades Prep, One and Two with an opportunity to participate in a range of athletic events. Students will be split into six groups and will compete in their grade level for the duration of the morning. Fun and participation are the themes of the day. Children will need to wear house colours, broad-brim hat, sun protection and suitable footwear for running. Children are asked to bring a water bottle, which can be refilled on the day. Spectators are welcome.

Auslan News

Grade Preps are learning the signs for Numbers 0-12+. Students have been playing number signing and sorting games. They have been learning how to sign the song: ‘Once I Caught a Fish Alive!’ Grade Preps made a Number jigsaw to take home to re-make and sign with their families. See if your child/ren can sign the numbers 0-12 for you!

Following on from their People/Occupations topic, G1-2s have been revising signs for Family and Sports. They are learning to sign simple sentences about Family Members and their favourite sports, including days of the week when they play a sport. Students wrote some simple sentences to sign, or designed a new t-shirt for a sport they love or that a family member plays, to practise signing “My favourite sport is [sport]” and “My [family member] loves/plays [sport].” This week they have designed a Weekly Family Sport Planner to sign when they or their family members play a sport.

Grade 3-4s have completed their mini books ‘About Me’ to practise signs for describing themselves in a social context. They practised signing their books at school and have now taken them home. See if your child/ren can have-a-go at signing their mini book about themselves, to you! Students are now working on their new topic of School/Education. They are revising signs previously learned for school, and are learning new signs for School Subjects, including: Auslan, Language/LOTE, Art, Music, Dance, Drama, Sport, PE, Health, English, Reading, Writing, Spelling, History, Maths/Numbers, Science, and Technology. Students are enjoying working on a PowerPoint to present to a small group, to lead sign practise of these signs.

Grade 5-6s are currently working on their Term 4 Learning Tasks. Students have begun writing their simple Auslan conversations based on topics we have been learning throughout the year!! Students are really embracing this task well… Many are well on the way to completing their conversations and are almost ready to practise them with their partner. Grades 5-6s are also revising some important signs they will be drawing upon in their Auslan conversations.

Wh… Qn Words: who, what, where, when, why & because, how, how are you, how old, how many, how much, and which.

Time Indicators: morning, afternoon, night, day, today/now, yesterday, tomorrow, before, after, will & finished, last week, 2weeks ago, 3weeks ago, in 2weeks time, in 3weeks time etc.

Students will be practising their conversations this week, and recording them thereafter.

Music News - Japanese Taiko Drumming

Recently, every class had the opportunity to participate in a Taiko Drumming Incursion as part of the Music Curriculum. It was a thrilling, high energy workshop where we learned to play a variety of rhythmic patterns! We learned about the history of taiko drums and their importance in Japanese culture. The Junior and Middle schools also learned the Sakura fan dance. Every class was invited to dress up in traditional Japanese costume as part of their Taiko workshop.
