From the Head of the Junior School

Part of the learning that is so vital in the Junior School is in the realm of the social-emotional. Young brains and bodies are far from developed, particularly in those areas of self-regulation, and decision making.

Our staff are committed to helping students develop the attributes, skills and strategies they need to thrive socially and emotionally. From time to time, students need additional coaching and teaching in this area. I’ve been working with teachers and students this week with the guiding question: How do we help each other to feel safe and happy at school?

We are working through identifying feelings (which are never bad) and what these feel like in our own bodies, and what they might look like in the bodies and faces of our peers. Learning to read even the smallest gestures is important – small gestures and facial expressions can show enthusiasm, happiness, empathy, disgust, sadness or disappointment. We talked about how to manage feelings and how others read them.

A big area of focus is how to be a hero – for yourself and for others. Many children are still learning how to be assertive, rather than passive or aggressive and how to stand up for others as a hero. It’s wonderful to have parents who are working with us, knowing that as we work through sometimes very small issues with their children, we are training them in empathy, resilience and respect even from a young age.
