Mental Health Month Reminders!
October is Mental Health Month. This month encourages all of us to think about our mental health and wellbeing, and that of others around us. It’s also an opportunity to understand the importance of good mental health in our everyday lives and encourages help seeking behaviours when needed.
Here’s some tips to support a friend or family member if you’re worried about their mental health or you notice they seem stressed;
- ASK: Check in and ask how they are going, mention that they haven’t seemed like themselves lately.
- LISTEN: Use active listening to show you care about what the person is saying, ensure you aren’t distracted. Ask questions to clarify if you need to, don’t impose your opinions or go straight to solutions.
- VALIDATE: Let the person know you hear their concerns, respect their boundaries, let them know they can talk to you in the future if needed.
