Year Seven

Mathematics

This term the Year Seven Students have been busy studying linear graphs. They were introduced to co-ordinates by using a table and identifying the relationship between the “x” and “y” co-ordinates.

Once this skill was mastered, Students explored the Cartesian Plane. They identified the four quadrants and the value of the co-ordinates. They were able to describe the first quadrant has having both positive co-ordinates; the second quadrant has negative “x” and positive “y”; the third quadrant as having both negative co-ordinates; and the fourth quadrant as having a positive “x” and negative “y.” Thereafter, Students plotted co-ordinates on the Cartesian Plane. This led to them realising that when co-ordinates are plotted in a straight line, it produces a linear graph. From the graph, we can identify other co-ordinates.

We moved on to analysing these linear graphs and identified domain and range of the co-ordinates. Students enjoyed these activities as they involved the drawing of graphs.

Wood Technology

Over the course of the Term, Year Seven students have been busy working their way through the various stages of the Design Cycle and creating their designed solution the “Cerberus Lamp”. Students were provided a design brief which outlined the need for the lamp, some constraints and considerations when building the lamp, and other background information to build the solution.

With this information they then began using their knowledge of Safe Operating Procedures of various hand tools to create their lamp.

In the remaining weeks of the Term, Year Sevens will complete their lamp and evaluate their progress in order to identify their strengths and areas of improvement if they were to complete the project again.

Humanities

We have continued our learning on ancient civilisations, focusing on students developing their understanding of how life has changed over time and what elements have stayed the same.

It has been quite entertaining to watch students faces light up as they learn the origins of modern-day toilet paper first being designed as a 'Xylospongium'; or the calendar first being used circa 2000 BCE; the first known minting of coins in ancient Rome; how the Democratic system in use today originated in ancient Greece; and how the material of silk was first discovered in ancient China by accident.

Students are now exploring what caused the downfall of these civilisations and reflect on the cause and effect of the fall from power.

Visual Communications

Year Seven Visual Communications class has largely concentrated on visual content creation and principles of design. Students have been introduced to tripods and its importance for not only low light capture but fine-tuning compositional skills. Interestingly enough, there is a mixed reaction to the use of tripods and future studies will reveal that they are a necessity under various conditions.

Spanish

In their Spanish classes, our Year Seven Students have been exploring a diverse range of language skills. One of the highlights has been their mastery of telling time in Spanish. From "¿Qué hora es?" to confidently expressing the hours and minutes, their linguistic prowess is truly commendable.

Furthermore, these budding linguists have delved into describing their daily school routines in Spanish. They now confidently articulate their activities, enhancing their conversational skills and cultural understanding. It's heartening to witness their enthusiasm for embracing a new language and culture.

In grammar studies, our Students have tackled the intricacies of conjugating stem-changing verbs and reflexive verbs. Through engaging lessons and interactive activities, they have honed their ability to navigate these linguistic nuances. We encourage you to ask them about their experiences and celebrate their progress in this linguistic journey.

We are immensely proud of the dedication and passion the Year Seven students bring to their Spanish studies. As we continue this exciting exploration of language and culture, we look forward to witnessing their continued growth and proficiency.
