Year Five
Dear Year Five Families,
It is hard to believe that we are almost closer to the end of Term 4. Students are making a significant progress in the different areas of their learning.
Reading
In Reading, we are learning to identify the themes of stories so that students can understand the message from an author. We had explored various books of Margaret wild to make the prediction by looking at front cover of the book and writing the possible themes in a story. Students are also working diligently in their literature circles, where they are taking responsibilities through the various roles such as a summariser, predictor, questioner, and clarifier to expand their understanding of the text.
Writing:
In Writing, we analysed different types of poetry so students can create their own poems to express thoughts/emotions. We have explored lantern poems and looked at structure and poetic element of the poem. Students are able to connect with this aspect of poem as they can make the connection by using their imagination and it's also enhancing their critical thinking skills.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, we explored angles and geometric reasoning by looking at angles at different points. The students have started using mathematical language to describe angles and calculated the missing angles. Students did the post assessment on angles and our next steps will be looking at area and perimeter of different shapes and connecting them to the real-world problems.
Unit of Inquiry
In our final Unit of Inquiry, students have chosen their social issues and started with their research investigation. They had chosen an art medium to express their social issue and will elaborate their understanding on how it impacts the society. We looked at the different forms of arts, which includes painting, sculptures, sketching and shading.
Remembrance day Assembly
Last Friday, in honour of Remembrance day, our school held an assembly to pay tribute to the brave men and women who served our nation and continue to serve our nation.
Term Four Reminders:
As we are in the final term of the year, there are many things to remember:
- Hats - As per the department policy, hats must be worn in term four. If students do not have a hat, they must go to the shaded eating area during recess and lunch. It is important that students have the Saltwater hat, as it is likely that PE class may be held outside. All caps are not allowed for primary students.
- MacBooks - MacBooks are required at school every day fully charged as per the Digital Use Agreement from the beginning of the year.
- School Carnival- November 18th from 9am-4pm
- Christmas Carols - In term four, we have Christmas Carols. 5A, 5C, and 5E will be performing 12 Days of Christmas by Pentatonix, and 5B and 5D will be performing Deck the Halls by Love to Sing. More information about Christmas Carols will be available at a later date. If you do not want your children to take part, please email their classroom teacher.
- Early Holidays - We understand that some families will be going away early for the Christmas holidays. If you have a planned holiday, please let your child/ren's classroom teacher know as well as the office.
- End of Year Celebration - Adventure Park, Monday 4th December
Kind regards,
Year Five Teachers
