Year Four

Hello Year Four families,

Term Four is well and truly underway and slowly coming to an end. We are so proud of the Grade Four students and their growth throughout the year. Here is all the learning that has been taking place.

Inquiry:

The Grade Four students have found studying the workings of inquiry to be one of their favourite units. They have been delving deeper into the central idea of 'Changes to Earth's surface happen quickly or slowly over time.' We discovered that weathering and erosion have caused gradual changes to the well-known spiritual monument Uluru over time. Students in Year Four investigated how heat forms cracks in rocks and how wind smoothes surfaces. In order to comprehend how the tectonic plates create earthquakes, we have also carried out a number of scientific experiments.

Mathematics:

Students have been studying measurement and geometry in Mathematics. They finished volume last week, and this week they're starting angles! We have been applying the measurement and geometry units to real-world scenarios, since math is all around us. They have been able to use the formula length x width x height to work out the volume of numerous 3D objects. Students have been identifying angles across the school and discovered that there are numerous right-angled triangles in the classroom. Observing students becoming aware that maths is all around them has been wonderful.

Literacy:

In Reading, students have been continuing to increase their reading comprehension skills by applying the the question-answer-relationships (QAR) approach through a number of activities including developing their own questions after reading texts and challenging their peers to answer them. In Writing, students have been working on applying the scientific method to write scientific experiments which includes writing a hypothesis and recording their observations. We are now moving into the phase of our Inquiry where students are developing their wondering and commencing their research on their chosen topic. Students are very excited to be exploring and showcasing their learnings.
