Year Three

Dear Saltwater Families,  

In Year Three we have had a wonderful two weeks of learning and the students have been very excited to participate in our internal camp activities during school time as well as our Werribee Zoo excursion.

Reading

In Reading, we have been focusing on identifying the author's message in non-fiction texts. We shifted our focus to identifying the different non-fiction text features and the impact that they have on the reader.

Students have been utilising their prior knowledge about text features and the purpose of these in texts, to reinforce students understanding of the author's message in non-fiction texts. 

Writing

In Writing, we have been creating our own information reports. We unpacked the structure of an information report to develop an understanding of topic sentences and vocabulary. The students used topic sentences in their writing to begin a body paragraph. Students focused on using topic specific vocabulary to strengthen their writing and engage the reader about the topic. 

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students revisited solving subtraction problems with an emphasis on finding the most efficient strategy. Students used the column strategy, number lines and split strategy as well as visual tools to solve subtraction problems. From here, students focused on developing their understanding of multiplication to identifying the most efficient strategy to solve a problem. Students used equal groups, array, number sentences and visual tools to solve multiplication problems.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students focused on identifying the interdependence in an ecosystem and identified how food chains and food webs work. We focused on identifying different key elements that make up the food chain pyramid. Students in Year Three, had the opportunity to participate in a Webex session with a guest speaker from India, where they focused on the causes and impacts of disruptions to our ecosystems, as well as our responsibility towards their conversation. The students we able to make authentic links to their prior knowledge.

Reminders 

- Remember to bring a water bottle with fresh water each day.  

- Remember to bring a waste-free lunch on Wednesday for the school waste-free Wednesday!  

- School begins at 8:30am, with continuous entry from 8:20am. Please be on time promptly at 8:30am. 

- Late arrivals (8:40am onwards) require a late pass from the office. 

- If your child is away, please remember to upload your reasons on XUNO; please reach out to the office or your classroom teacher if you need support doing this. 

- Students need to complete their homework every fortnight.
