Year Two

Dear Saltwater Families,

As the school year draws to an end soon, we are still working hard in Year Two in all areas of the curriculum. Read on and find out what amazing things we’ve been learning about lately:

Reading

In Reading, students have been exploring more about non-fiction texts, in particular, their features and how the different sections link together. They have also been working hard on their reading goals, which they have the opportunity to develop throughout the week through targeted intervention. Additionally, we have begun NAPLAN practice and helping students understand how to break apart comprehension questions.

Writing

In Writing, students are wrapping up learning about narratives. Over the course of this unit, students have learnt about the different sections of a narrative and have developed their ideas to create a fantastic piece of work. As NAPLAN approaches early next year, we are re-exposing them to different text types we have worked on this year including information text, persuasive texts, procedural texts, recounts and poetry.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we finished our units on Multiplication and Division. We have started a new unit on fractions. Students discovered what halves, quarters and eighths were on known shapes, as well as understanding how fractions relate to division as well. Students were also exposed to the language of numerator and denominator.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, we have begun our new unit on ‘Celebrations and Traditions’. These past few weeks, students have been learning about different types of celebrations from all around the world, as well as reasons why some people don’t celebrate certain events. We also planned for our cultural picnic which took place last Thursday. It was such an amazing day! Everyone enjoyed sharing their cultural food with their cohort and wearing a tradition item of clothing. It was great to see everyone interacting with students from different classes, as well as hearing why students had brought their traditional dish.
