Term 4 Week 6 2023 - Friday 27th October

What have we been up to?

It’s hard to believe that we are already halfway through Term 4 but we’re excited for all the learning still to come. On Wednesday next week,  we are excited to finally share our class movies at Southland Cinema and also the staff movie as well.

Over the last two weeks in Reading, we have been developing a deep understanding of different texts by using a single text and exploring it in many different ways. Students read an Indigenous text called ‘Our World’ which explored the unique life of people in the Bardi Jawwi Community in the Northern territory. The text explained what life is like in Yooloon and what is unique about the areas the characters live in.

In Writing, students have put together their own Explanation text by following the structure and conventions they have been learning about over the last 5 weeks. They have all done a great job explaining how different things work or how different things are done. We look forward to sharing these texts with you once they have been published.

In Maths, students have been working on developing their understanding of directional language and how this can be used to give and follow movement and position instructions. They have also been building their knowledge of shape transformations by exploring how shapes can be slid, turned and flipped.

In Science, students have been given the opportunity to share their toys and objects that produce light and sound. They have enjoyed sharing their toys and identifying where the sound is coming from and where the light is produced from. Inquiry lessons have focussed on the cultures of students’ grandparents and all classes have made maps showing the origins of different members of their families.

Here are some photo highlights from the fortnight that was!

What is coming up?

Reading

In Reading, students will continue developing their comprehension skills by exploring how to think deeply about texts by making inferences about character actions and emotions. Students will use evidence from the text; such as what characters say or how character’s look in illustrations, to support their inferences.

Writing

Over the next couple of weeks in Writing, students will begin exploring the topic of transactional writing. They will look at examples of transitional writing in texts such as ‘The Day The Crayons Quit’ and ‘A Monster Sent Me A Letter’ and work towards developing their understanding of text conventions when writing a letter.

Maths

In Maths, students will be revisiting multiplication and division and further developing their understanding of how different sized groups can be used to represent certain equations. They will also be building their understanding of reading analog and digital clocks and using the language of time to describe the duration of events.

Inquiry & Science

In Inquiry, students will continue exploring new and unique cultures with focus on their traditions and celebrations throughout the year. In Science, students will further their understanding of how light and sound can be observed and manipulated in our world.
