Visual Arts

In Visual Arts this week, Foundation learnt about the significance of Remembrance Day, where they glued small pieces of different red papers to a poppy template. Year 1/2 students continued to weave various materials to create their hessian wall hanging. Year 3/4 students continued to weave their radial loom. Year 5/6 students practised making knots and how to make a twisty out of two pieces of yarn which was then turned into a bracelet, and they began to weave their loom board.

Year 6 students continued to work on their ‘Leaving Your Mark’ art project piece.

Culture Studies

Last week in Culture Studies, students continued to learn about the Polynesian culture and their traditions, where they explored the tradition of the Tatau (Tattoo).

The Tatau is very important because it expresses the person's personality and identity and tells their story with honour. Students were able to design their own Tatau by looking at traditional symbols. Students then traced and transferred their Tatau design onto a printing foam piece, then using black paint to create their Tatau print onto paper. With their final Tatau print students then created a frame around their Tatau out of icy pole sticks, which then became a Tatau wall hanging.

PE

Over the past two weeks students from years 1-6 have continued to learn the skills of tennis. We have had a focus on learning both the forehand and backhand skills, but also being able to hit them with control to be able to play with a partner. The goal has been to hit calmly and consistently to be able to have a long rally. This requires each student to focus on their skills and support their partner by hitting the ball in an area that allows them to hit it back. Each student has come a long way from hitting balls too hard, too high or too long to more accurate and consistent shots and it has been awesome to see their improvement in such a short time. Well done everyone.

Preps in Foundation have continued to develop their hand eye coordination skills, as well as team work and gross motor skills. They have participated in a number of tabloid skills to develop their skills in catching, throwing to a partner and a target, passing and working together. It has been great to see their enthusiasm with these skills and their improvement. Keep up the great work Preppies.

Health

Due to the long weekend, we only had one health lesson over the past two weeks. This lesson had a focus on how the body works. The body system we focused on was the Circulatory system. This followed up the digestive system and identifies how our food is used by the body, and the circulatory system is how the nutrients, vitamins and oxygen is transported around the body via the blood system. We also discussed why and how our heart rate and breathing increases during exercise. The students are really excited to learn about how the body works.

Bike Education

The Bike Education program has continued with the 5/6 students undertaking their first 3 lessons on the bike working on basic riding skills and safety on the bike. The 3/4s had their first practical lesson this week. The skills that students have been working on have included braking safely, riding with control, scanning sideways and behind, using breaks, riding on different surfaces and riding in groups safely and cooperatively.

All of these skills are designed to allow students to develop their riding confidence, but also to be able to ride in the community safely and respectfully.

The more items we sell, the more money will go straight back to our school, so come along.

Additionally, if we make over $5000 in sales, Miss Anna will give Mr B a crazy hairdo! Now that is an incentive!
