Spotlight On
Life Skills and Working in the Community
At Anson Street School we have always supported a multimodal approach to communication and embedded this within the school community.
We thought we would share an example of how we are adapting an activity to make it more inclusive and encourage student participation.
Each week, we have been taking a group of Stage 6 Life Skills students to Mini Woolies as part of their Working in the Community subject. We have been challenging students to become more independent in the roles of both the customer and the worker. The skills required to perform the roles have been taught through prompting and independence is supported by providing visual sequences of the steps involved in each of the roles. Students have been using a combination of speech, sign and Proloquo2go app on the iPad to communicate with each other during the activity. We have been recording their progress and have observed that the amount of prompting needed has reduced over time.
We are so excited about the growth and learning that the students have shown!
