SSP NEWS:

Team Selection Process for Tournaments and Competitions

It is an exciting time for WHC with over 530 students in our Specialist Sports Program. However, this also creates complexities around team selection for tournaments and competitions. It is simply not possible for all student-athletes to be selected.

Please understand that although student-athletes are a part of the SSP, this does not guarantee automatic entry to any WHC interschool or representative team. Head coaches are responsible for team selection and any factors contribute to this process, including; skill, ability, team dynamics, effort, behaviour and attendance.

We know that non-selection can be difficult for parent-carers, but we thank you for your understanding and support of our program and all student-athletes, whilst we move in to a heavy phase of competition over the next three terms.

Parent-Carer Concussion Evening, Tuesday 4th June

We were lucky enough to have Dr Drew Slimmon present to over 45 members of our SSP parent-carer community for our concussion education session.

It was a wonderful night, learning and interacting with a world leading expert in the field. Parent-carers were given an insight into how to support youth athletes in their return to learn and competition, after a suspected concussion.

Please see the attached concussion information booklet from the evening, which includes return to play guidelines, how to recognise a concussion and dietary recommendations to support recovery.

Please keep an eye out for our future suite of SSP parent-carer events. We will be aiming to facilitate one workshop per term.

Sport Psychology

We have been fortunate to have the services of provisional Sports Psychologists from the Institute of Social Neuroscience deliver educational workshops to our student-athletes.

Please ask your child about their experience in;

Year 11-12: Performance Anxiety (Unlocking Potential)

Year 9-10: Resilience and Mental Toughness

Year 8: Mindfulness

Year 7: Introduction to Sport Psychology

Our coaches have been actively implementing some of these evidence-based strategies in to practice on the court, field or pitch.

Netball

This week we saw the Junior Boys; Junior Mixed and Intermediate Boys Netball teams compete in the School Sport Victoria Barwon Division Finals. It was fantastic to see some of the boys from the Male High Performance Netball Program out on court putting their training into match play and competition.

The Intermediate Boys team won the final on the day so will progress to the Western Metropolitan Region Finals in Term 3, a big congratulations to Brenna Loe (coach) and the team on a great result. The Junior Boys won their first game, lost the second game, and won their consolation final, and the Junior Mixed team drew two games and lost one game. The teams were also fortunate to have Alistair Punshon, Australian Men’s Netball Player, as a specialist coach on the day. Everyone involved had an enjoyable day and are to be congratulated on the way they represented WHC.

Back at school we have been working through assessments in the education sessions. The Year 7 & 8s have been presenting their research task on a Suncorp Super Netball League team. They have done a wonderful job investigating, researching and putting what they have learnt onto a slide presentation to deliver to the class. The Intermediate & Senior year levels have chosen a netball skill or concept they have learnt this semester in the on court sessions and planned a netball session of their own on this skill. They then got the opportunity to be the coach and deliver it to a group of players. We have been super impressed by the high standard in both these presentations across the netball program.

We hope everyone has a restful extra long weekend and look forward to seeing everyone back and ready to go for this last part of Term 2.
