On Friday 14 June, Year 12 Chemistry students ventured to the University of Melbourne to engage in university science and complete an organic analysis of unknown chemicals in preparation for our first area of study for Unit 4.
We learnt about the concepts of spectroscopy to name samples of unknown organic chemical compounds using several different types of spectroscopy: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Infrared (IR) and Mass Spectroscopy (MS).
These analytical instruments enabled us to determine the molar mass, type of bonds and wavelength of radio waves to therefore determine the potential chemical compound.
This data was provided in the form of graphs that our groups had to interpret and utilise to calculate the composition of a particular sample. This experience was highly engaging and we are grateful to have had the opportunity to explore this incredible equipment.
We were provided a chance to experience how these techniques work, in order to better understand the topics we will be exploring next.
Being able to perform the experiments ourselves gave us an incredible insight to university and its chemistry department and was also a fun trip to help us bond with our class. An excursion to remember!

Year 12 Drama students, Maia Mendez, James England, Mia Tsaousis, Alice Lyons and Tom Farkas visited Box Hill North Primary School and ran Drama activities with the Grade 3/4s. It was a fantastic experience for both the older and younger students creating connections that span schools and age groups.
