Principal's Report

Every day matters

Dear Homestead Community,

In this term's newsletter, especially with upcoming exams, I aim to delve into the concept of Perception Vs. Reality.

Each day, I am continually impressed by the behaviours exhibited by our students. However, I often ponder whether their perception of success as senior school students aligns with reality.

In my discussions with students, it's apparent that many perceive success as simply wanting something and expecting it to materialise effortlessly. However, the truth diverges significantly from this notion.

The path to success is seldom smooth, and it is not easy. It demands substantial hard work and determination. Particularly for Year 12 students, the upcoming months leading to their final exams in November will be challenging. Success requires not just hard work but also a deep understanding of oneself as a learner, a willingness to reflect, the creation of actionable plans, and resilience in executing them. It involves making the most of every moment, as time is precious. Additionally, success relies on leveraging all available resources, including the invaluable support of our teachers. While they are here to guide and assist, ultimate responsibility lies with the students themselves.

Some students may attribute success to luck. Yet, I firmly believe that the harder you work, the luckier you become.

With challenges ahead, I want to reassure our students that our dedicated staff at Homestead are fully aware of these challenges and remain committed to supporting our students every step of the way.

I encourage all students and families to remember that our team is here to provide guidance, assistance, and a supportive environment where students can thrive. Together, we will navigate the road to success, overcoming any detours, setbacks, or roadblocks that come our way.

I would also like to take a moment to acknowledge that not every student will have the perfect exam period this semester. And that's perfectly okay. These experiences are valuable learning opportunities that provide us with insights into areas where improvement is needed. I encourage all students to reflect on their performance and set goals to strive for even greater success in Term 3 and beyond.

In keeping with the theme of Perception Vs Reality, I want to address the subject of College Voluntary Contributions.

As a new school, we are blessed with incredible facilities, which the college has continued to further improve to ensure that our students have a school they truely appreciate and enjoy attending. Our high rates of student engagement, network-leading attendance and strong academic results, suggest they truely do.

While the perception may be that these spaces will always be available, the reality is that its existence is only possible with funding. The funding the school receives covers basic curriculum delivery, maintenance, and operational costs. However, additional amenities such as the Café, Strength Lab, Study Centre, fully air-conditioned spaces, uniform and equipment support for students in need, adequate staffing, and a range of specialist subjects offered are made possible through voluntary contributions.

The college suggests a reasonable Voluntary Contribution of $200 per year. If every family were to contribute, this would amount to over $80,000, further enriching the Homestead experience for all.

We understand that not every family is in a position to contribute the full amount and we appreciate any contribution. If you are in a position to support please contact the front office on 7379 9600 or email on homestead.senior.sc@education.vic.gov.au.

Perception versus reality is a crucial concept to consider, especially in education. It's essential for students to understand that success isn't a matter of simple desire but rather a result of hard work, determination, and resourcefulness.

As educators and parents, let us promote the understanding and importance of effort and perseverance in achieving goals. When we insist our students take responsibility and accountability, we empower them to take charge of their academic journey and strive for excellence.

Warm regards,

Danijel
