Maths is more meaningful when children can use their hands and have fun! Here are a couple of ideas you can do to practice maths and have fun at home.
Bottle Cap Maths
Upcycle bottle caps for this simple and fun math game you can play at home! Have your child create their own masterpiece with the bottle caps and then trace them to create the layout of the game. Then start rolling the dice and adding up with the objective of the game being to fill your “picture” back up with bottle caps!
You can use this activity to practice many skills: number recognition, addition, subtraction and even multiplication!
Jellybean Math
A snack plus math! What could be better?
Have your child open up a packet of jellybeans (skittles/m&ms/smarties). Before looking at what is inside, have them answer the questions on the sheet. The last question will require them to ask their family members what their favourite colour is.
Then, have them pour out the contents and count how many their actually are. They can then graph this in the table provided.
An important part of this activity is the conversation afterwards. Talk to your child about the probability of blinding getting each of the colours. Which colour has the highest chance to be chosen? The least chance?
This activity has children developing and practicing skills in probability, counting and data representation.
