Nillumbik Youth Summit

On the 22nd of May the Nillumbik Youth Council hosted its biannual event called the 'Youth Summit'. Schools from across the shire travelled to the Eltham Community Centre where the students participated in an hour-long discussion on relevant topics which affect them, being: climate change & the environment, mental health, physical health, gender equity, cultural diversity,

LGBTIQA+ inclusion, social connection and more. Following our hour-long brainstorm discussion with the table, we moved to the 2nd table doing the same thing. Finally, we took to the stage as a pair to share our ideas on how the government can realistically implement ideas to improve on our discussed topic in front of 2 members of local parliament. Everyone spoke really well and had amazing ideas which we're excited to see implemented in the upcoming year or 2. There was a morning tea break with mini golf, catered food, and initiatives such as headspace, anti-gambling, and a few more, as well as a lunch break before our presentations also with catered food.

IDAHOBIT Day at DVC

On Friday May 17, DVC celebrated IDAHOBIT Day, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. Staff and students wore a splash of rainbow to recognise the day and show their support for the LGBTGIA+ community.

At recess we held a morning tea, where staff and students were joined by Vicki Ward our MP for Eltham. It was a great event with lots of colour and food and an overwhelming turn out of staff and students.

At lunchtime, Nillumbik Council came to our Library to run a range of craft activities. Students were able to design and make their own badges while also making loom badges.

Overall IDAHOBIT Day was another fabulous day at DVC.

Enrichment and Extension Program

Tournament of Minds is coming up, would you like to compete?

Tournament of Minds is a problem-solving program for teams of students from both primary and secondary years. Tournament's aim is to enhance the potential of our youth by developing diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a challenging and competitive environment.

They are required to solve demanding, open-ended challenges from one of the following disciplines:

  • The Arts

  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)

  • Language Literature

  • Social Sciences

Tournament of Minds is an opportunity for students with a passion for learning and problem solving to demonstrate their skills and talents in an exciting, vibrant and public way.

The rapidly increasing and widespread involvement of thousands of participants throughout Australia and internationally, demonstrates that Tournament of Minds is not only a worthwhile investment in the education of our youth, but is also an integral part of our collective future.

This is a chance to represent Diamond Valley College and compete against other schools and show them how awesome we are

May in the library! Star Wars, Clubs, and more!

This has been a great month at the DVC Library!

We started off the month with our Star Wars Day celebrations. We had craft activities, a bounty hunt, a paper plane race, and our trivia quiz! Heaps of prizes and stickers were up for grabs, and much fun was had by all! Less than 350 sleeps until the next one (but who’s counting).

We recently got some new books in, with some of them receiving rave reviews! My personal favourite this month has been the mystery novel ‘The Inheritance Games’ by Jennifer Lynn Barnes.

As usual we’ve had our clubs running in the library, with a special shout-out to the new to 2024 Fishing Club. We’ve had a great time talking about past catches and sharing tips, and we’ve learnt a lot about just how complicated fishing can be!
