Battle Dragons
City of Secrets (#3)
Plot Summary:
This is a book about a kid named Abel who moves to a town called Glassblowers Gulch after committing crimes and being involved with Kin gangs. When he arrives, he meets a girl named Kayda who asks him to take care of a baby dragon named Omelet.
The Verdict:
This is a really good book if you are looking for action adventure/Science Fiction content. I really enjoyed it, HOWEVER ...
In my opinion the battle/war at the end felt a little rushed and complicated which let the plot down. If the author had maybe saved the battle for a 4th book in the series, it could have made the story so much better. Since they only use about 50 pages to get the main characters ready for war this is nowhere near enough time. Also, I felt that the way in which Abel immediately sided with the dragons, who were going to war with humans, was tacky and had no impact at all.
Age Rating: 8-12 years old
I personally would recommend this book for students in Grades 5 and 6 as it does contain a lot of themes and words that a younger student will not understand and several attempted murders or fake deaths not appropriate for a younger reader.
Book Author: Alex London
Other books in the series: City of Thieves (#1), City of Speed (#2)

A Walk in the Dark
Written by Jane Godwin
Five head into the forest,
but will all five make it out?
A Walk in the Dark is a fictional adventure book about a school excursion that turns into a series of unfortunate events, set in the Otway Ranges here in Victoria. A group of five Year 9 students set off on an overnight hike for school with no adults not knowing that a storm is coming. When they fall behind schedule they start to stress. During an unpleasant night they learn a lot of lessons about friendship, trust, identity, family and boundaries.
A Walk in the Dark is quite a slow book to begin with. It doesn’t get too exciting until around page 100 when the walk begins. I would say this book gives more in suspense than adrenaline and excitement. What I liked most was how much detail the author put in and how she brought the character personalities and differences to life within the pages. I found it interesting how the characters didn’t really know each other or feel comfortable to begin with but over time they got used to one another except for one!
Overall, I rated the book 4 out of 5 stars, if you enjoy scary, slow building suspense I would
highly recommend. However, if you are a fan of fast paced action or science fiction books I would not advise reading A Walk in the Dark unless of course you feel like trying a new genre. I would strongly recommend that the book only be available for ages 11+/Grade 6 students.
