Year Four Team News

with Rebecca, Brittlee, Toni & Matt

Hello Year Four families,

Fortnightly Curriculum Focus

Literacy: In Reading, Year 4 students have continued with their novel study of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone written by JK Rowling. Students have also explored texts relating to Reconciliation Week and Sorry Day, such as dreaming stories and ‘Stories for Simon’ written by Lisa Mirana Sarzin to understand the perspectives of The First Australians. The Grade 4 cohort also made their own pledges on how  to be an ally to the First Australians. Students have started to explore texts relating to our ‘Changemakers’ Inquiry unit where students have listened and investigated stories about influential notables and the positive impacts and changes they have made to the world. These stories include David Attenborough, Evonne Goolagong and many more. Continuing into weeks 9 & 10 students will start to research for their ‘Changemakers Project’.

In Writing, Students have worked towards publishing their persuasive writing pieces written earlier in the term. Students have used their knowledge of persuasive devices, paragraphing and following a structure to further their skills when persuading their audiences. Students are continuing to research for their changemakers project, paraphrasing their research into their own words. Students will continue this into weeks 9 & 10, working their way through the writing process.

Numeracy:  In Numeracy, Year 4 students have started and finished their unit on Data and Statistics. Students have conducted their own research by asking a question to their fellow peers and surveying each other. Students have then turned this research into data displays by making hard and digital copies of these graphs. Students also interpreted information to answer graphing questions. Continuing into weeks 9 & 10 students have started their financial maths unit, working with budgets and calculating change. Students are continuing to use online programs such as Essential Assessment, reinforcing skills whilst targeting specific individual goals

Inquiry:Students have concluded their work on First Nations Australians and the impacts of European Settlement and have started their research on our Changemakers unit. Students are all choosing their own individual person to research, exploring what impacts they have made in society, why they are a notable individual and other individualised facts. As the term continues, this will be presented into a project.

Willy Kids & Respectful Relationships:

Our fortnightly focus has been: Willy Kids show a Growth Mindset. Students were shown different scenarios and asked how characters have demonstrated a growth mindset. Students have then reflected when they’ve shown a growth mindset and how they can continue to do so in their learning.

This week grade 4 students have studied Respectful Relationships lessons on strengths, zooming in on particular strengths they would like to improve on and reflecting each day on whether they’re working towards this.
