Japanese Update

Japanese Newsletter May 2024

Konnichiwa, watashi wa Umezu Sensei desu. Hello! I’m Umezu Sensei, the new Japanese teacher at St. Anthony Primary School. I have been warmly welcomed by the community and I am delighted to be part of such a vibrant and respectful school.

This term, we began our Japanese learning journey by focusing on "WATASHI," which means "Me." The students have learned how to introduce themselves with respectful bowing. They also created self-portraits and delightful pictures of their "kazoku" (family), while learning the vocabulary for family members.

In Week 4, we celebrated Children’s Day (May 5th) by making koinobori. Children’s Day is a national holiday in Japan that honours and respects children. Koinobori, or cloth carp streamers, are flown on poles outside homes and in public places. The koi fish symbolises determination as it swims upstream through powerful waterfalls. Parents wish for their children to grow up strong and determined like the koi fish.

I am excited to immerse the students of St. Anthony’s Primary School in more cultural experiences through hands-on activities. I look forward to watching their love for Japanese culture and language blossom as they develop their skills and knowledge. "Douzo yoroshiku onegaishimasu.
